The baptism of Jacob ARNEY has indirect reference in the Moravian Diaries:

June 3, 1778 (Bethania Diary): "Johann Jacob Spoenhauer came to me with the request that I would visit him and his brother-in-law Arny, and baptize their children."

(Johann Jacob Spainhour married Anna Catherina Volck in 1773, and Johann Heinrich (aka "Henry") Arney married Maria Magdalena Fulk. Anna and Maria were daughters of Andreas and Maria Fulk. So these men were brothers-in-law because their wives were sisters. And keep in mind that spelling of the time was flexible: Spainhour & Spoenhauer; Arny & Arney & Erny; Volck & Volk & Fulk & Folk; They are very clearly all the same people. ANYWAY, the child awaiting baptism is my G4 Grandfather, Jacob Arney, born 18 Mar 1778. He was the second of Henry and Maria Magdalena Arney's 14 children.)

He was born in Surry County, NC. But in 1789 Surry was split, and the location of his birth became “Stokes” County. Another split in about 1850, and the location became “Forsyth” County.

It's not known when he left North Carolina. I can't find him there in the 1810 census. However his father and other members of the family are still there, see notes with father. I did find a note that "all his children were born in Ohio", which would mean he was there by 1808. He is clearly in Ohio by 1811.

1811 POLL TAX, CHAMPAIGN CO, OHIO:

Jacob Arney is listed as paying the 1811 poll tax.

His first wife (our ancestor), Nancy TRUITT, died in February, 1819, leaving Jacob with 3 children, one a tiny infant. Jacob then married Azuba WEST on 26 May 1819. Azubah had been previously married to Daniel Davis, who died 25 Dec 1818. She had 3 children by this previous marriage (Elizabeth born 1809, William 1810, and John 1812).

1820 CENSUS, OHIO, CHAMPAIGN CO., MAD RIVER TWP:

“Jakob” Arney is found, with new wife Azubah. Count of children is consistent with his three, her three, and their new baby Hannah.

1830 CENSUS, OHIO, CHAMPAIGN CO., JACKSON TWP:

Jacob is found, with 2nd wife Azubah. All his children by both marriages fit the count. (Actually the female age 20-30 could be either Jacob's oldest daughter, or Azuba's oldest daughter, both of which were named "Elizabeth".) There are 2 males age 15-20, who would be Azuba's sons by her first marriage, John and William.

1840 CENSUS, OHIO, CHAMPAIGN CO., MAD RIVER TWP:

Jacob is found with wife Azubah. It is apparent that Sarah (age 21), daughter from his first marriage, still lives with him, plus 5 children from his second marriage.

Jacob Arney is mentioned in the “History of Champaign County” Chicago, W. R. Beers & Co., 1881, in the chapter on Mad River Township. Year is unclear, seems to have been early 1800’s. Reference is “Jacob Arney, a native of North Carolina, settled near the site of Terre Haute.” (NOT to be confused with Terre Haute, IN - - this is a TINY village in Ohio northeast of Dayton, near Urbana.)

TERRE HAUTE (in 1880’s):

“This village is situated on Storm's Creek, in the southern part of the township, and contains a population of 125. It is surrounded by a rich, fertile country, and, but for the fact that it is minus railroad facilities, would be quite a business center. A railroad is now being agitated, and, in time, the people may have the pleasure of hearing the "toot" of the locomotive at their doors. The village site, originally, was the property of Squire George Craig, who had it surveyed into town lots in 1838.”

All his children by both wives were born in Terre Haute (Storms Creek), and he died there. Will written 28 Jun 1848, Champaign Co., Ohio, probated 2 Sep 1848.

1850 CENSUS, OHIO, CHAMPAIGN CO., MAD RIVER TWP:

Widow Azuba is found living there, with their youngest daughter, Jane.

reports that she was born in Sussex, DE, and reports the date of death used above.

This death date is shortly after the birth of a child, and suggests she might have died of childbirth complications? However following suggests she died of consumption (tuberculosis).
