1840 CENSUS, OHIO, CHAMPAIGN CO., JACKSON TWP:

John and Margaret are found in the 20-30 age range. They have one son under age 5 (that would be Jacob Sylvester). John is engaged in agriculture.

MOVING WEST:

The 1860 census below says that daughter Mary C (11 Oct 1841) was born in Ohio, Elizabeth E 27 Feb 1844) was born in Illinois, and son Ambrose 16 Nov 1847) was born in Iowa. And in the 1856 Iowa census, John said he had been in Iowa about 10 years. So it looks like leaving Ohio in about 1843, spending a bit of time in Illinois, and getting to Iowa in 1846.

NOTES FROM 1850 CENSUS, OHIO, CHAMPAIGN CO., JACKSON TWP:

(This is a real puzzle. There is a VERY similar family here, compared to the one in Iowa, below. I almost have the impression that maybe the census taker was getting false info from someone describing a family that had moved on?) Anyway, here we have: John is 31 and a farmer, Margaret is 30. Children are Jacob (10 or 11), Sarah 8, Elizabeth 6, Ambrose 1. Everybody was born in Ohio. No children are indicated as attending school.

John’s step mother Azubah is still in the county, as is his brother Joseph H. But I’m convinced John and family had moved on! This Ohio record is almost certainly a double-count!

1850 CENSUS, IOWA, UNION TWP, DAVIS COUNTY:

I believe this is the “real” John Arney family, even though they were indexed as “Earney”. John is 31, Margaret is 30, Jacob is 11, and Charlotte is 8 – all of these were born in Ohio. And there is Ellen (6, born in IL) and Ambers (Ambrose) (2, born IA).

His brother Jacob, with wife Clarissa, is also in Davis County, Iowa.

Note: First wife Margaret died in 1854. John remarried, to Minerva Smith Taylor.

NOTES FROM 1856 IOWA CENSUS, MARION TWP, DAVIS COUNTY, IOWA

John, age 40, is there with new wife Minerva (31). At home are Jacob S (17), Mary C (14), Ellen E (12), Ambrose (8), and Joseph H (0). John says they have been in Iowa for 10 years. He is in the militia. John and Jacob are the farmers. Also in household is Rebecca Taylor (11), Minerva’s daughter by her first husband. The agricultural statistics say they are raising hay, spring and winter wheat, oats, corn, potatoes, hogs and cattle. And they are producing butter and wool, but no cheese.

NOTES FROM 1860 CENSUS, IOWA, DAVIS COUNTY:

Pretty sure this is the right John Arney. He was born in Ohio and is living next door to Thomas Grafton, age 33, who would be his brother-in-law by his first wife Margaret, who would now be dead. He now has a new wife, “Manerva” age 36 born in Tennessee. Living with them are three of his and Margaret’s children; Mary C. age 18, Eliz. E. age 16, and Ambrose N. age 12. There are three other children, may belong to his second wife? Also a Sarah Taylor, age 64 – that would be Manerva’s mother-in-law from her first husband.

1870 CENSUS, IOWA, DAVIS CO., UNION TWP:

Census record almost illegible, but John age 54 is there. Born in Ohio. This time his wife’s name is indexed as “Maneroy H Arney”. Children are Thomas, Joseph, John, and Hannah.

1880 CENSUS, IOWA, DAVIS CO., UNION TWP:

Family is indexed as “Amey”. He is a farmer, born in Ohio, living with wife Minerva, sons Joseph and John, daughter Hannah.

BURIALS – FIND-A-GRAVE:

John is buried in Troy Cemetery, Troy, Davis County, Iowa, USA. His second wife, Minerva is also there, and there are photos of both markers. Also there is his son John Scott Arney; his son Joseph Henry Arney; Joseph Henry’s son Herbert A. Arney; his half-brother Jacob Arney; and Jacob’s wife Clarissa Cook Arney.

There also appears to be an “Arney Cemetery” in Troy, with only two listings, no other info. But the listings are for his first wife Margaret Brown Grafton Arney, and his step-mother, Azuba West Arney. Reported “From 1930s WPA Graves Registration Survey: Wife of J. Arney Sr.”. Suspect the location has since been lost?

Birth:                      4 Jul 1824                Tennessee

Death:                     13 Aug 1897            Troy, Davis Co., IA

Marriage:                 12 Dec 1854             Troy, Davis Co., IA

Notes:

Minerva’s first husband was Hezekiah Taylor (1822-1847). They appear to have had two children, Rebecca (20 Oct 1844 – 26 Sep 1929) and Sarah (abt 1847 – bef 1856). Hezekiah’s parents were William Taylor (1793-1853) and Sarah Roby (1796-1887).

In the 1850 Davis County census, Manerva is living in the household of her parents-in-law William and Sarah Taylor, along with her two daughters, Rebecca A (age 5) and Sarah J C (3). However in the 1856 Iowa census, only Rebecca (age 11) is with her, suggesting that Sarah has died. In the 1860 census Sarah Taylor, Minerva’s mother-in-law, age 64, is living with the Arneys.
