Misc. Notes

Much of the following is from “An Aten Genealogy”, by Alan J. Lamb.

“Hendrick Aten was the first child of Adriaen Hendrickse Aten and probably his first wife whose name is not known. Hendrick was born about 1661 in Flatbush in the Dutch colony of New Netherlands. Flatbush was on the western end of Long Island and was one of the ‘Dutch Towns’ which were eventually to become Brooklyn. Shortly after Hendrick’s birth the English took over New Netherlands in 1664, and it became New York permanently after another Dutch-English conflict in 1674.”

“On 26-30 Sept., 1687 Hendrick and his brother Thomas were recorded as taking an oath of allegiance to the English crown. Both were identified as natives, and were thus born in New Netherlands. At the time Hendrick was identified as being in Brooklyn (Breucklijn) and Thomas of Flatbush (Fflackbush).”

Hendrick married Mary (Maria) DeMott in about 1694. Hendrick Aten and his sister Annetje Aten Skillman were witnesses to a baptism on 22 May 1698 at Flatbush. On 7 Oct. 1707, Hendrick and his sister Pieterje (Pieterie) Aten Snedecker were witnesses to a baptism of their sister Annetje Aten Skillman’s child.

Hendrick and Mary resided at Foster’s Meadow, near Jamaica, Queens Co., NY. Land records show he owned considerable land there. Records of the First Reformed Dutch Church of Jamaica show the baptism of Elizabeth, their daughter, on 20 Oct. 1713. Also on 27 Apr. 1715 their daughter Mary was also baptized.

He made his will on 10 Feb 1749, and it was probated 4 Feb 1751. “Hendrick died 19 July 1750 according to the Bible record of his son Adriaen. That New Testament and Psalms was published in Holland in 1637 and contains a wealth of family information including the following entries translated from the Dutch language: ‘In the year 1750 on 19 July died father Hendrick Aten; In the year 1752 on 23 April died his wife Mary L.’”
