Misc. Notes

Much of the following is from “An Aten Genealogy”, by Alan J. Lamb.

“Jan (John) Aten and his twin brother Gerradus (Garret) Aten were the 7th and 8th children of Adriaen and Jacobje Middagh Aten. They were born 22 December 1732 according to family bible records, in Hunterdon Co., NJ. The twins were baptized at the Readington NJ Dutch Reformed Church on 4 February 1733. Witnesses were Dirck and Christina De Moth (Mott). The given names of the twins probably came from Jan and Gerrit Middagh, brothers of Jacobje’s father Dirck.”

(See the will of their mother in the report on Jacobje MIDDAGH, for the status of John and Gerret in 1775.)

Lamb reports that “It appears that Jan and Elizabeth moved to the Conewago coloney in PA about 3 miles south of Gettysburg. Jan and Elizabeth Bodyn Aten baptized their daughter Antie there on 10 Jan 1773.”*

Note from Timothy E. Peterman approved application to the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) for recognition as a descendant says “John Aten...assisted in establishing American Independence while acting in the capacity of Private, Capt. Andrew Foreman’s Company, York Co., PA Militia.”

*(Various sources list “children of Jan Aten and Elizabeth Sutphen/ or Bodyn:”, suggesting there might be an issue as to whether Elizabeth’s last name was “Sutphen”, “Bodyn”, or “Badyn”! However I found in the Dutch Reformed Church Records the image for the baptism of their daughter “Antie” on 10 Jan 1773 with father “Jan Aaten” and mother “Elizabeth Bodyn”, at Conewago, York, PA.)
