Following
genealogy notes (found in a query section on the web) may offer clues for
investigation:
There is no
definitive proof who the ancestors of Peter Barberie ~1725-1770 were. We know
his father's name was Peter from a 1736 deed showing Peter Basbarrie, Sen.
living on Herring Creek. We also know he had a brother Abraham and probably
another named Isaac. I believe that circumstantial evidence points to Peter Sen.
being John Peter Barbarie born 16 Jul 1698 in New York City, wife Elizabeth du
Sarchoy. They had a son Abraham born 1723. In several New York records John
Peter went by the name of Peter. The Barbarie's were a merchant family of
Huguenots who had business dealings in North Carolina and the Caribbian Islands
that came from La Rochelle,Guyenne Province, France by way of London in 1688.

Martin, 5/21/02)
OTHER BACKGROUND:
By Tim Peterman:
"One
of my 64 great-great-great-great grandfathers was Jesse Barbre, who was born
before 1749 in Tyrell Co., NC, the son of Peter Barbre, who was of French
Huguenot ancestry. “The Barbre Book”, by Barbara Jean (Barbre) Evans,
1989, contains a lot of details about this family. The name appears in
records as Barbre, Barbaree, Barberie, Barberry, Barbry (and other
variations). Peter Barbre witnessed a deed in Bertie Co., NC as early as
May 8, 1734. A deed dated Dec. 13, 1736 mentioned 400 acres on Herring
Creek whereon Peter Barberrie, Senior now lives (Bertie Co., NC Deed Book F, p.
18). This suggests that both Peter Barbre Sr. and Peter Barbre Jr. were
present in Bertie Co., NC and old enough to make legal documents. Records
at the LDS Church claim the family descended from a Claud Barbre who settled in
a Huguenot community in Virginia. Others claim the family descended from
a Huguenot named John Peter Barberie who moved from Staten Island, NY to the
eastern tidewater country of North Carolina in the mid-1730s, bringing sons
Abraham, Isaac, and Peter with him. The latter possibility is more
plausible because in 1762, Peter Barbaree was made administrator for the estate
of Abraham Barbaree in Bertie Co., NC. Tyrell Co., NC records show that
Peter Barbre married Elizabeth Stansell before Aug. 22, 1750. She was the
daughter of John and Sarah (Smithwick) Stansell. The will of Peter Barbre
proves that this man was identical to the father of Jesse. However, we
know from Jesse’s estimated birth year that Peter must have been married
beforehand. Since our Peter Barbre must have been of legal age as early
as the mid-1730s, this wouldn’t be surprising.
"Peter
Barbre of Tyrell Co., NC wrote a will on April 28, 1770, in which he named his
wife, Elizabeth, his son, Jessie, son Peter, daughter Mary, son James, son
Stansell, son John, son Isaac, daughter Rhoda, daughter Martha, and daughter
Susannah. His executors were Jesse Barbre and John Stansell. The
will was witnessed by John Stansell, James Barbre, and Sarah Stansell and
entered into probate in Nov. 1770 in Tyrell Co., NC. The last located
record of Elizabeth Barbre was a deed dated Oct. 17, 1783, in which she and her
sons, John and Isaac, sold 198 acres in Martin Co., NC along the northwest
prong of Coneto Creek (Martin Co., NC Deed Book A, p. 445) This land was
located just a few miles east of Tarboro, NC, near the current border of
Edgecombe Co., NC and Martin Co., NC.
Written 28 April 1770. Sick & weak in body. To my wife Elizabeth Barbree my gray mare; lend to her my estate & small children, to be divided after my wife's decease [wording not entirely clear]. To my son Jesse Barbree 1 desk. To my son Peter Barbree 117 acres on Coneto Island; after his mother's death or widowhood I give to him "my grate Bible." To my daughter Mary Barbree 1 linen wheel. To my son James Barbre 100 acres which had been taken up by Samuel Gainer. To my son Stansell Barbree my blacksmith tools. To my son John Barbree the lower part of the land where I now live and my plantation to my son Isaac Barbree. Lend to my children the use of my still. To my daughter Rhoda Barbree 1 cow & calf. To my daughter Martha Barbree 1 cow & calf; to my daughter Susannah Barbree 1 cow & calf. Lend to my wife during her lifetime or widowhood my negro man Kent; afterward he to be divided between James, Stansell, & John Barbree. Executors: Jesse Barbree, John Stancell, Peter (x) Barbree. Wit: John Stansell; James Barbree, Sarah (x) Stansell. Probated Nov Term 1770 before Fr. Ward, CC.
WAS ELIZABETH HIS FIRST WIFE?
Tim Peterman has put several pieces of a puzzle together, and concludes that Elizabeth was probably not Peter's first wife, and that Son Jesse (our ancestor) probably had a different mother. Tim is probably the only Barbre researcher who has put this story together. It revolves around the age of Jesse Barbre, concluding that he was born well before the marriage of Peter and Elizabeth. The following is extracted from his notes:
"Jesse Barbre is first recorded as witnessing a deed on May 12, 1764 in Pitt Co., NC. The legal age for witnessing deeds was 14 years of age, which indicates that he was born prior to May, 1750. This was well before the marriage date of Peter Barbre and Elizabeth Stansell and thus indicates that Jesse’s mother was an earlier wife of Peter Barbre. On Mar. 23, 1769, Jesse and Grace Barbre of Pitt Co., NC sold 125 acres lying on the north side of Moratek River in Cushie Neck to William Jordan, Jr. (Bertie Co., NC Deed Book L, p. 174). This proves that Jesse Barbre married Grace ____ prior to 1769, which is further evidence that Jesse Barbre was born before 1750. The fact that Jesse and Grace were in Pitt Co., NC indicates that Jesse had left home as early as 1764, which makes it likely that he was at least 20 years old then."

NOTES FROM TIM PETERMAN, (3/29/2004
and 9/17/2006):
"I’m pleased to announce that on March 24, 2004,
NSSAR (National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution) registered
Jesse Barbre as one of my Revolutionary War ancestors. I had long questioned
whether they would accept the “Barbre Book”, since there is no hard core
evidence that Jesse Jr. was the father of Jesse III - but it sailed right
through. I don’t know if the DAR would accept the same documentation for the
lineage.
"I
contended that Jesse Barbre III consistently stated that he was born in Indiana
in 1814. Of the few Barbres that were in Indiana prior to 1820, the only one
with a son of the right age was Jesse Jr. Plus, of course, Jesse Jr. was buried
in the same cemetery as Jesse III and Susan Weeks.
"Jesse
Barbre is first recorded as witnessing a deed on May 12, 1764 in Pitt Co.,
NC. The legal age for witnessing deeds was 14 years of age, which
indicates that he was born prior to May, 1750. This was well before the
marriage date of Peter Barbre and Elizabeth Stansell and thus indicates that
Jesse’s mother was an earlier wife of Peter Barbre. On Mar. 23, 1769,
Jesse and Grace Barbre of Pitt Co., NC sold 125 acres lying on the north side of
Moratek River in Cushie Neck to William Jordan, Jr. (Bertie Co., NC Deed Book
L, p. 174). This proves that Jesse Barbre married Grace ____ prior to
1769, which is further evidence that Jesse Barbre was born before 1750.
The fact that Jesse and Grace were in Pitt Co., NC indicates that Jesse had
left home as early as 1764, which makes it likely that he was at least 20 years
old then.
"Jesse
and Grace Barbre lived in Pitt Co., NC until 1773, when David Smith of Halifax
Co., NC sold to Jesse Barbre of Pitt Co., NC 200 acres in Halifax Co., NC
(Martin Co., NC Deed Book A, p. 158). This land must have been in the
extreme western end of what is now Martin Co., NC, within a few miles of the
land that Peter Barbre had owned.
"Jesse
Barbre didn’t stay long. He sold the 200 acres in 1777. On Feb. 14,
1778, Jesse Barbre purchased 200 acres in Sampson Co., NC, along the east side
of the Great Coharie Creek. His land holdings in Sampson Co., NC
eventually grew to 560 acres, which he was taxed on in both 1789 and
1794.
"During
the latter 1780s, Jesse Barbre began to acquire land in what is now Hancock
Co., GA, amounting to 450 acres by 1794. During the mid 1790s, Grace
Barbre began to pay taxes on all of the land in Georgia. On Jul. 4, 1799,
Grasey Barbre entered 200 acres of 2nd rate land in Warren Co.,
KY. The index of Warren Co., KY Order Book C shows that Jesse Barbre was
deceased & lists wife Gracy & children David, Jesse, Peter, John,
Sally, and Penelope as heirs. The actual order book has been lost.
There is no date on the index, but a date of ca. 1802 is implied. Without
any more data to go by, the possibility exists that Jesse died or was
incapacitated long before 1802 and this might be why Grace was taking care of
the family business. Grace (_____) Barbre continued to live in Warren
Co., KY, until her death in 1823. Her estate was entered into probate on
Jul. 7, 1823, with Samuel Whitesides administrator (Warren Co., KY Order Book
E).
"Family: (Generation
8) The 1790 census of Georgia and the 1800 census of Kentucky are
lost. A David Barbary was listed as a tax-defaulter in 1791 in Wahington
Co., GA. This could have been the son of Jesse and Grace. Jesse
Barbre and his family moved from Sampson Co., NC to what is now Hancock Co., GA
in the mid-1780s and to Warren Co., KY in 1799. Jesse Barbre died
intestate in 1802 or earlier. Some of his children settled in Perry Co.,
IN in about 1810, and from there moved to either Vigo Co., IN or White Co.,
IL. Grace Barbre can not be found in the 1810 census of Kentucky, or the
1820 census of either Kentucky or Indiana. Grace probably moved to Perry
Co., IN in the early 1810s. A history of Perry Co., IN states that as of
the summer of 1815, “…another negro was owned by Grace Barber, there being only
two slaves in the county…” Indiana was admitted as a free state in
1816. Grace Barbre returned to Warren Co., KY, where she died in 1823.
"Jesse Barbre and Grace (_____) Barbre had six children
(order uncertain):
1. David Barbre
(born before 1775, died 1812 in Franklin Co., IL), married Nov. 10, 1802 in
Warren Co., KY to Nancy Whitesides. [Note: If he was the David Barbary
who defaulted on taxes in 1791 in Washington Co., GA, he must have been born
before 1770.]
2. John Barbre
(born ca. 1771, died Nov. 6, 1856 in White Co., IL), married 1) Jul. 8, 1811 in
Warren Co., KY to Sally Doser, married 2) Aug. 26, 1830 in White Co., IL to
Sarah Gaughf (divorced Apr. 3, 1831), married 3) Apr. 6, 1831 in White Co., IL
to Jane Read (divorced Aug. 1853).*
3. Jesse Barbre [Jr.] (born Aug. 11, 1777, died Dec. 17, 1832 in Vigo Co., IN),
married Nov. 23, 1805 in Warren Co., KY to Sarah Stancil (or Stansell) (born
Sep. 1771, died Jan. 1841 in Sullivan Co., IN)
4. Peter Barbre
(born ca. 1775-80, died before Feb. 1836 in Perry Co., IN), married Aug. 27,
1806 to Sally Brackett. He served as Sheriff of Perry Co., IN beginning
in 1820.
5. Sally Barbre
(born, died), married Dec. 29, 1802 in Warren Co., KY to Abijah Morris.
6. Penelope Barbre (born ca. 1783, died), married Apr. 4, 1806 in Warren Co.,
KY to James McDonald.

OPPORTUNITY FOR FUTURE RESEARCH?
Jesse and
Gracy lived on Barbre Land by Blackberry Pond and Blackberry Grove in Warren
Co. Ky. Have land record of 1801 to about 1825. David and Peter also owned
property next to Jesse. At some period Gracy owned 2 slaves. Total property was
several hundred acres. Barbre Landing was the Barbre cemetery, now called Three
Rivers. The Barbre landing slid into the river and the headstones were moved to
Feduccia family cemetery.

EXECUTIVE JOURNAL OF INDIANA
TERRITORY 1800-1816:
APRIL 28, 1815: Jesse Barbre Commissioned as a Justice of Peace for Perry County. (Perry County was formed in 1814, it is located in southern Indiana along the Ohio river.)
1820 CENSUS, INDIANA, PERRY COUNTY:
“Jefse”
Barbre, age 26-45, his wife age 45+, and 7 children are found. The children are
a son under age 10 (that would be Jesse III), two sons age 10-16, two daughters
under age 10, and two daughters age 10-16.
1830 CENSUS, INDIANA, VIGO COUNTY:
What is
likely the correct family is found in the Vigo County, Indiana, census for 1830
-- numbers of people and ages appear correct. Head of household is Jesse
Barbre, and consists of six people (one male 15-20, one male 20-30, one male
50-60, two females 15-20, and one female 50-60).
BURIAL:
His grave is
in Sullivan County, Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery. This is just across the
county line from the above Vigo County. There are many Barbre’s buried in this
cemetery.
LAND RECORDS:
Looking at
the census data for Jesse Barbre II and Jesse Barbre III, I am confused because
they seem to alternate between Vigo County and Perry County, even though the
two are quite far apart. But land records do seem to support that was
happening:
2 Dec 1830: Jesse
Barbre of Perry County acquired a patent on 80 acres in Vigo County,
Section 35, Twp 10-N, Range 9-W.
1 Aug 1839: Jesse
Barbre of Vigo County acquired 40 acres in Vigo County, Section
34, Twp. 10-N, Range 9-W.
(Note: the
1830 land would be Jesse II. Presume Jesse III inherited this land, then in
1839 took out the adjacent block.)
1 Sep 1838: Jesse B
Barbre took out 40 acres in Perry County, Section 36, Twp. 6-S, Range
3-W. (And on 1 Aug 1839 his brother William Barbre took out 40 acres in the
same township, but Section 36.

1840 CENSUS, INDIANA, SULLIVAN CO:
“Sally
Barbary” in found in the 60-70 age group, with another female (age 30-40)
living in the house. Next door is “Seaborn Barbary” (presumably her son Seburn
Barbre). Seburn is age 40-50, his wife apprently 30-40, and there are 7
children and one older (60-70) female.
ANCESTRY OF SARAH
(Note from Tim Peterman):
"Sadly, I have never found any info on Sarah
Stansell. There should be SOMETHING from south-central Kentucky, since
that was where she lived when she married Jesse Barbre, Jr. Did you ever
notice that she was 5 years OLDER than Jesse? I have several theories:
1. She was married before, in which case Stansell was
a married name -a marriage bond should reveal this, if one can be found.
2. Let's say her maiden name was Stansell -her father
could have died young & her mother re-married, the family is in the records
but under a different, undetermined, surname.
"My
guess has always been that either her father or first husband, depending on
which theory is right, was descended from the John Stansell family. (see notes
with Peter BARBRE.)
