Misc. Notes
SOURCE NOTE:
Much of the
following is loosely extracted from “The Founding and Founders of Barnes
Methodist Church, Southampton County, Virginia” by Joe H. Drake. See more
extensive notes with Jacob’s son, Benjamin Barnes.
KEEPING TRACK OF THE JACOBS:
In his
discussion, Joe Drake refers to “Old Jacob”, who is the person to whom these
notes are attached. And he also refers to “Young Jacob”, who is a son of Old
Jacob and the brother of our ancestor Benjamin.
“Jacob
Barnes (1735-1796), hereafter described to as Old Jacob, owned more than 331
acres (in Southampton County, VA) located approximately where Darden Mill Run
(the Cypress Swamp) crosses Sands Road and continuing south past Barnes Church
on Statesville Road and then east along Barnes Church Circle for about a
mile. Old Jacob also owned more than 600
acres in Pitt County, and 543 acres in Northampton County, North Carolina, and
also 156 acres in Edgecombe County, North Carolina. (Memo: Northampton County,
NC, is just across the border from Southampton County, VA.)
“At the
execution of his will in 1790, Old Jacob left eldest son Benjamin land from
about where Darden Mill Run crosses Sands Road west on Sands Road for
approximately one half mile.
“Young Jacob was devised the land commencing
where the land devised to Benjamin ended to where the church is today on
Statesville Road. Today this land is
owned in part by Claude Drake (a 5xG Grandson of old Jacob) and in part by
Nancy Parker Matthews.
“The home plantation was willed as a
reversionary interest after the death of Old Jacob’s wife to sons Thomas and
Josiah. This is roughly the same land as
the farms owned today by Boone Drake (a 5xG Grandson of old Jacob), and Carol
Drake Majors (Carol is a 5xG Granddaughter of old Jacob).
“To his sons Joshua and William, Old Jacob
devised the land in Pitt County, and to his son, James, he devised the land in
Edgecombe County.
He left
daughters Anne Barnes and Sela Vick, a room in his house while they were
unmarried. (Sela’s surname was Vick, so we concluded that she was a widow.)
The rest was
left as a life estate to his widow. If she remarried, it was to be divided
equally between his wife and his children, with the home plantation going to sons
Josiah and Thomas. The will was signed by Jacob and witnessed by Edmund
Barrett, James Barnes, Jesse Vick, and Jesse Barrett.
“Old Jacob purchased the Northampton County,
North Carolina land after he made his will in 1790. After the death of his wife, Elizabeth, in
1802, it was sold between his children.
