Misc. Notes
Hubert
Brower, the earliest known ancestor of the Brower family of Chester and Berks
Counties, Pennsylvania, came to the country from Nenwild in the Palatinate
(Note: Neuwied - A town in Rhenish Prussia) arriving in Philadelphia on May 4,
1726. He was accompanied by his wife Ann, three sons, Henry, Christian and John
and two daughters. The original pass, or permit, issued to Hubert Brower and
his family is still in the possession of his descendants. The name Brower is
Sometimes called Brewer. It is believed that the name is of Holland origin. The
early Dutch Records of New York and New Jersey spell the name Brouwer. Nothing
is known of Hubert, where he settled nor when and where he or his wife, Ann,
died. The three sons, Christian, Henry and John settled on the banks of the
Schuylkill in what is now East Coventry Township, Chester County, as ealy as
1742.
There was
another of the name, Daniel, who was related in some way to the other three
perhaps another brother. They all owned large tracts of land, John had 133
acres, Christian had 200 and Henry had 286 acres. Christian obtained his land
through a grant from the Proprietaries, while both John and Henry purchased
theirs in 1743.
Hubert and
wife Ann arrived in Philadelphia on May 4, 1726. Hubert brought a letter from
Peter Roth in Germany to his brother John Roth who lived near Skippack,
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. An article on the Roth family, in the German
Society of Pa. magazine says that Hubert Brower later married the widow of John
Roth and they lived near Skippack.
Following
from Jay H. Brower's " The Browers of Coventry Twp., Chester Co.,
Pa." in MENNONITE FAMILY HISTORY, July 1985, pp 103 – 105.
They came
from Neuwied, Germany but original home was in Switzerland;
FROM DAVID
OTTO, South Carolina, 2007::
I am happy
to announce that "The Pass," dated 1726, for the immigrant, HUBERT
BROWER, has "surfaced." "The Pass" was required of any
person or family who wished to emigrate from Germany to America in the 18th
century. "The Pass" was like a Passport or travel paper, and was a
signed, sealed letter from the local Burgermeister (Mayor) testifying that the
bearer and family were allowed to emigrate, were free of debt and were of good
standing. This is a very rare document, there are few still in existence. I
purchased "The Pass," two translations of same, "The Oath of
Allegiance" for Henry Brower (Hubert's son) and a document which
endentures a female to said Henry Brower.
TRANSLATION
OF "PASS" (Memo: I also got a copy of the German Version – Fred
Coffey):
"Whereas
the bearer of this, Heubert Brauer, a citizen of Huss (Fuss?) Yonnheim, and his
lawful wife Anna, besides three children (3 sons and two daughters) have today
made their appearance before us and declared that they wanted an authentic
attest as to their honest origin and good behavior, - and whereas they applied
in due form for such an attest, to be used and produced by them in case of
necessity, - and whereas the truth shall not be withheld but communicated on
demand, - and whereas we feel ourselves inclined to act justly and equitably, -
therefore we declare hereby, according to our duty as well as to right and
truth, that said Brauer with his family has conducted himself in an honest and
fair way and lived peacefully with his neighbors, so that he deserves all
praise and honor, - and whereas he intends to leave this place and look
elsewhere for his fortune, therefore we request each and every one not only to
let pass and repass the said Brauer, free, safe and unmolested, on his proposed
travel to the New Land, but also to favor him with a kind intention, under an
offer of reciprocal service."
"This
attest is given in conformity with the truth and certified by our handwriting
and Judicial Seal. Huss-Yonnheim, High County, Falkensteinean Jurisdiction. May
1, A.D. 1726. Johannes Gutenberger, Magistrate [Mayor], Frederick Rithaler,
Judge; Philip Roder, Judge; John DieterKolb, Judge; Andrew Kirscher,
Judge."

Misc. Notes
Index to
Chester County, PA, Wills and Intestate Records 1713-1850, shows John BROWER
died intestate in Coventry Township in 1777.
He like his
brothers settled along the Schuylfill River in what is now Coventry Township,
Chester County, Pa. Very little is known about this John Brower. From the deeds
we learn that he purchased of Sebastioan Wagner & wife Sybilla on 21 April
1743, a tract of land in Coventry, adjoining land which he seems to have
purchased earlier but did not have recorded, and land of his brother, Christian
Brower.
Part of this
land John and his wife Susanna transferred to Daniel Brower (both names
appearing on the original deed as Brewer), for 300 lbs, on 3o May 1770.

Misc. Notes
CAUTION: There is no really solid evidence in hand that this John BROWER, is the father of Mary BROWER, our ancestor.
FROM TIM PETERMAN: I have never seen proof that our Brower line goes back to John Brower/ Catherine Amick. I am inclined to think that our Mary Brower (md Jacob Kivett) was actually the son of Jacob Brower; and I have suspected that this Jacob Brower was a brother to a Nicholas Brower who would have been born in the 1770s. I think they may have moved to Randolph Co., NC from Pennsylvania in the 1780s. I would really have to check my notes, though, because I haven't looked at this in over 5 years.
1800 AND 1810 CENSUS, RANDOLPH CO.,
NORTH CAROLINA:
John Brower
is found in both censuses, with a daughter the right age to be Polly. In the 1800
census, he has 4 slaves. In 1810 he has 6 slaves, and there is one "other
free person". In 1810 there are two pairs of adults in the home, all in
the 26-44 age group.
In both
censuses, the oldest adults are in the 26-44 age group. Therefore John and Catherine
must have both been born in 1766-1774.

Misc. Notes
Family
Connection unproven.
Not sure
last name was Amick. However other Amick family married both Browers and
Kivetts, so seems plausible.
