HIGH SCHOOL PICTURE
(Notes,
By Maxine Palmer)
"After
graduating from high school in 1946 I went to Des Moines and worked for a
finance company for two years as a clerk-typist. I met Bob in Garden Grove after he was
discharged from the Army after three years service. We dated for a year and a half and were
married in Des Moines, March 4, 1948.
We began our
married life on a farm south of Garden Grove.
We lived on a mud road - with no electricity or running water. We milked cows and raised chickens and Bob
farmed and went to GI school two nights a week.
Ronald was
born March 8, 1949 and when he was two we decided we wanted to try something
different, so we sold everything we couldn't pack in a car and headed for
California in March of 1959. Bob's folks
decided to go too, so they got a small trailer house and off we all went. It took eight days to get to Los
Angeles. What a trip following a trailer
all the way!
THE PALMERS,
1959
We spent
five years in Southern California. Bob
worked for an air conditioner company and I worked for Coca-Cola Bottling
Company as a secretary. Larry was born
Sept. 22, 1955. We then decided that a
farm in Iowa was the best place to raise two boys. We again milked cows and raised chickens and
Bob farmed. I dressed lots of chickens
for other people to make extra money.
One smmer I dressed over 500. We were blessed with Sheryl on Sept. 11, 1957
and our family was complete. We rented
several different farms until we were able to buy our own farm in 1970. When our children were living at home there
were always lots of cats, a dog, a pony and sometimes pet
raccoons. The boys enjoyed hunting and
fishing and still do when they come home.
I have been
employed at O'Bryan Brothers in Leon for the past 18 years, sewing lingerie and
sleepwear.
(Maxine retired in 1991. She and Bob lived in retirement in Garden Grove. During much of this time she helped our dad -- first in his own home, and then when he moved to the nursing home in Leon in 1995. Although a non-smoker, she developed lung cancer in 1997.)
