Misc. Notes

Note: Came to America (Philadelphia, PA) on ship SAMUEL August 17, 1731. Ship sailed from Rotterdam, Holland and stopped at Cowes, England then to America. Arrival list reads “A List was Presented of the Names of Thirty none Palatnes, who with their Families, making in all One hundred & seven persons, were imported here in the Ship Samuel, Hugh Peircy, Master, from Rotterdm., but last from Cowes, as by Clearance from that Port. (The family heads declared intent to settle and live peaceably, and signed “Declaration of Fidelity and Abjuration”.)

Settled in Pennsylvania. See "Pennsylvania German Pioneers" pg. 41 Andreas and Ann lived on the banks of the Cocalico River in Lancaster Co., PA known as the "Ephrata Community". May have been born in Oedheim or Tifenbach, Germany. Shown on the Ephrata Register as #39.  (They would have presumably been one of the "supporting families" of the Ephrata Cloister, since the Brothers and Sisters were celibate, see below.)

Observations on Ephrata Cloister (www.ephratacloister.org):

"One of America's earliest religious communities, the Ephrata Cloister was founded in 1732 by German settlers seeking spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Gathered in unique European style buildings, the community consisted of celibate Brothers and Sisters, and a married congregation of families." (Note: The Cloister is still maintained in Ephrata, PA, and is open to visitors.)

From Wikipedia: Founded in 1732 by Conrad Beissel. The orders were celibate. In addition to celibacy, the members believed in strict interpretation of the Bible, and self-discipline. Members were required to sleep on wooden benches 15 inches wide, with wooden blocks for pillows. They slept six hours per night, from 9 P.M. to midnight, taking a break for two hours to "watch" for the coming of Christ, then sleeping from 2 A.M. until 5 A.M. They ate one small meal a day, and spent much time at work or praying privately. Services every Sunday were led by Beissel, often being several hours long. Other believing families settled near the community, accepted Beissel as their spiritual leader and worshipped with them on the Sabbath. These families made an integral part to the cloister, which could not be self-sustaining without them.
