Frederich ERNIGH (~1705 - 1771) & Anna

CAUTION: This “Frederich ERNIGH” is NOT the ancestor of the Arney family that includes me (Fred Coffey) as a

Our “Arneys” descend from a Jacob Arney,
discussed in the above report. This Frederich ERNIGH did
have a son named Jacob, but it was an entirely DIFFERENT “Jacob”. Many of the
descendants of his Jacob settled in the Bethlehem/Allentown area of
Pennsylvania and used the surname “Erney”.
For some
time, we thought that the Arney and Erney lines might have a MRCA (Most Recent Common Ancestor)
back in Europe. But we now have DNA results that indicate they HAVE NO COMMON
ANCESTRY!
Where did
our original information come from? Stan Arney wrote
an explanation as follows:
“Well,
anyone researching the Arney's, has come across this
quoted "source", the newsletters titled, "We Are The Arney's", by Ms. Edna
Williams.
I,
myself, had never read them, because I could never
find any copies of them. However, recently I found a couple of people,
who had copies of these newsletters. Since they seem to be, one of
"the most quoted" sources, for Arney
genealogy information, I really wanted to see what they were all about. I
was hoping, they were actually research information that Ms. Williams had
performed and was stating for others. However, as I read them, I began to
realize they were not newsletters about her own research, but rather a
compilation of "supposed" research by many individuals, who sent her,
their information, and she simply quoted what was sent
her, in her newsletters. Meaning, it's a compilation of "family
tree" information, passed on to her. Whether or not, these
individuals had actual documentation to "back up" their statements,
is unknown.
So, what did
“We Are the Arney’s” say?
According
to "We Are The Arney's"
volume 1, issue 1 - 1994, There are records of Frederich
Ernigh and family coming to PA on board the
"Pennsylvania Merchant" on Sept 11, 1732. The ship left Rotterdam,
Holland with a stop in Plymouth, England. The record does not say where the Ernigh's boarded the ship. Frederich
and wife Anna Maria had two children with them, but there seems to be no record
of them once they arrived. It is possible that their names were altered to save
confusion in the new world. The name seems to have evolved Ernigh
/ Earney /Erni / Arni / Arney. In Frederich's will made in 1771, Colebrooksdale,
Berk County, PA, he lists five children:

The
ship “Pennsylvania Merchant” carried German “Palentine”
immigrants. Mostly they came from “The Palatinate” which was situated west of
the Rhine and north of the French (Alsatian) border. Palentines
may come from Germany, France, or Switzerland. They became the “Pennsylvania
Dutch”, or more correctly “Pennsyvania German”.
I (Fred) am
prepared to believe that much of the above is plausible, and probably correct.
The big problem is that it doesn’t connect to OUR Arney
line. It appears a more correct title might have been “We are the Erney’s!”
So, what do
we know about the Erney family? I
helped recruit the participation of a member of the Erney
line, who was born in the Bethlehem/Allentown area in Pennsylvania, where there
were MANY”Erney” people living. Mr. Denis Ronald Erney agreed to participate in y-DNA testing.
We made an
effort to track down part of the “Erney” line, and following is my summary. The path down to Denis Ronald Erney is highlighted
