MEMO: The
Hampton family tree is large, and some of it not well documented. I have
included the individuals marked in "hyperlink blue" below in a single
document: (If viewing on-line, you can click on the links to jump to the right
section.)
I also
draw your attention to the individuals circled in red below, because I believe
these are better documented.
Here I have referenced what seems to be a very carefully documented book, "Adventurers of Purse and Person
VIRGINIA 1607-1624/5", Fourth Edition, Compiled and Edited by John
Frederick Dorman, C.G., F.A.S.G.
This is a
3-volume set covering the earliest settlers of Virginia and their offspring.
The "Fourth Edition" was published 2003-07, "…to commemorate the
FOUR HUNDRETH Anniversary of the First Settlement at Jamestown 1607 …dedicated
to the memory of those intrepid Adventurers of their Person who suffered
hardship and gave their lives that a civilization might be created in the New
World and to those Adventurers of Purse who dared to invest in support of the
noble venture."

Misc. Notes
(The
Jamestown colony was founded in 1607. Our earliest ancestor there was Thomas
Graves, who arrived in 1608. However the Hampton branch of our family was not
far behind!
"William
Hampton, son of Laurence Hampton., Sr., of Twickenham, Middlesex, England was
baptized in that parish 28 May 1592. He arrived in Virginia in the Bona Nova in 1620 and his wife Joane
arrived the next year in the Abigail (with
3 children). They were enumerated in the census, 1623/4, at Buck Roe and were
twice listed in the muster, 1624/5, at Elizabeth City, once by themselves, his
age being given as 34, and again in the
muster of Edward Waters where his age was given as 40 and hers as 25.
"The
will of Lawrence Hampton of London, tailor, 9 Nov 1627 – 12 Feb 1628/8,
left £10 to his brother William Hampton, "to be paid unto him within
twelve months after his return from Virginia in the parts beyond the
seas," and if he died before his return from Virginia gave that sum to his
sister Philadelphia.
"On 10
Dec. 1627 William Hampton, planter of Elizabeth City County, leased for ten
years a 50 acre tract at Buck Roe, bounded on the east by the creek parting the
land from Point Comfort Island, and on 13 Aug. 1634 leased for 100 years a 100
acre tract. Finally, 11 Dec 1640, he secured a patent for 550 acres in
Elizabeth City County for the personal adventure of himself and Joane his wife
and naming Willi. Hampton, Grace Hampton and Eliza. Hampton among the
headrights.
"By 25
March 1650 when he patented 700 acres on the east side of the easternmost river
in Mockjack Bay, he had moved to the portion of Gloucester County which is now
Matthews County. One of the headrights named in this patent is Philad. Hampton,
possibly his sister. His will, now lost (reported copied in 1743 by John Hampton
"before the courthouse burned"), was dated 5 Sept. 1652 and divided
his Gloucester County land between his sons William and Thomas.

Misc. Notes
Thomas
Hampton (son of William) was born 16 Apr 1623 (according to family bible,
presented to him "by his affectionate son John Hampton on his sixty-fifth
birthday, 16th April 1688").
A clergyman,
he was minister of Hampton Parish, York County, 1649-58, and of Wilmington
Parish, James City County, 1658-90, and also served Wallingford Parish in James
City County in 1677-80 or later. On 6 Jun 1651 he and Thomas Duke jointly
patented 430 acres containing two necks of land on Warrany Creek on the east
ide of Chickahominy River and, as the survivor, of James City County, on 21 Jan
1671/2 he conveyed this land, as 450 acres, to Daniel Parke. On 6 April 1653 he
patented 550 acres nearby, on the east side of Chickahominy River on Tyescan
(Diascond) Swamp and on 11 Oct 1658 repatented this tract with 150 acres added.
He also patented 400 acres on the north side of a branch of Tyascon, 8 March
1658/9, and out of this tract sold 100 acres to Joseph Preston and the
remainder to Mary Duke, widow of hi former associate, who, 30 Nov 1670, as Mrs.
Mary Wade, repatented the land as 463 acres.
The land in
Gloucester County which he inherited from his father was conveyed to his son
John, 8 Jun 1677.

Misc. Notes
Many
Ancestry.Com sites show Margaret Wade’s mother as Mary Hampton, but this is far
from universal. Of those that do, many do not identify Mary Hampton’s ancestry.
However some
sites show Mary Hampton as a daughter of Thomas Hampton, which would make
Margaret’s husband John II her first cousin.
Many others,
however, show Mary Hampton as a daughter of John Sr. Hampton. That would mean Margaret’s
husband John II was her uncle!
(Uncle-Niece
marriages are presently prohibited in most of the USA, unless you are Jewish
and live in Rhode Island. Genetic experts say it is the genetic equivalent of a
double-first-cousin marriage, and 20 states do allow that. Uncle-Niece
marriages do seem to be allowed in Australia. They were also common among
Habsburg Royalty in Europe.)
