1810 CENSUS,
VIRGINIA, FAUQUIER CO:
Mary Hampton
is head of household, age 26-44. Living at home are 5 of her sons and one
daughter. There is one male under 10 (Alfred), 2 males 10-15 (Joseph &
Francis) 2 males 16-25 (Lawson & Jeremiah), and one female 16-25 (Susanna).
They have 2 slaves. She lives not far from a James Weeks and a Thomas Weeks --
I suspect that this is the family Mary’s daughter Susanna married into –
Susanna's husband Lewis Weeks would have been the son of James and the brother
of Thomas. Also not far away is Lawson Hathaway, who would be Mary’s brother.
See Alfred
Hampton, Liberty, Hancock, Ohio
1850 CENSUS,
INDIANA, VIGO CO:
Mary has
apparently remarried, her name is now Mary Cooksey. She is age 82, and living
with her son Alford Hampton, age 49, and his wife and 8 children. They live not
far from Mary’s granddaughter Susan and her husband Jesse Barbre. Listed after
Mary Cooksey is a black female, Sarah, age 75, with no last name provided (she
is indexed as Sarah Cooksey). A guess might be that Sarah is a former slave,
who continued to live with her? Although Indiana was a “Free State”, the system
was often abused and most of the citizens had negative attitudes toward blacks.
The fact that the census taker did not feel that recording a last name was
necessary says a lot?
Note: Alford
and his wife were born in Virginia, as was their first son. The second son was
born in Ohio, suggesting they moved about 1832. A total of 5 children were born
in Ohio. Then 3 children were born in Indiana, suggesting they moved to Indiana
in about 1840.
FIND-A-GRAVE:
Mary Cooksey
is buried in Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, Farmersburg, Sullivan County, Indiana,
USA. Died October 11, 1854, per tombstone. Mary is buried near her son Alford
& his wife Huldah
