Misc. Notes
Note that the history of the
Herman family is closely related to that for the Mann family. See the bio for
George Bernhart Mann for additional discussion. Note also that much of this
material is taken from the book by Dorothy Knoff:
After the arrival of the Mann
family in 1732, another group of Palatines arrived on September 28, 1733,
aboard the Brigantine "Richard and Elizabeth". There were 43
families, with 137 persons, and included in the list of passengers was one
Jacob Harmon, age 40. He was traveling with his wife Catherina, and children
Dewald, Catherina, Barbara, Jacob, Hance, and Hance Peter. He also signed the
oaths, but in his case it was with a mark instead of a signature. Based in part
on the name, and in part on the names of those the family was traveling with,
this family may have been of Swiss origin, and they may have settled in the
Palatinate for one generation before moving to America.
We find "Jacob
Herman" in the records of the same Trinity Lutheran Church as the Mann
family. Jacob and his wife sponsor the baptism of one of the Mann daughters.
And on December 21, 1742, George Bernhardt Mann and his wife sponsor the baptism of the Hermans' daughter
Maria Elizabeth, born October 22, 1742. This Elizabeth is also our ancestor
through her ultimate marriage to the Manns' son, George Adam.
The Hermans moved to Virginia
at about the same time as the Manns, and acquired adjacent lands – see
the Mann family notes on land ownership and the involvement of the official
Anglican church in civil matters. The Anglican church (Augusta Parish) also had
the duty to assign orphans to suitable homes. Their records show that on May
21, 1750 the orphan Elizabeth Smith, age 4, was bound to Jacob Herman. And on
September 18, 1758, orphan Philip Williams was also bound to him.
"In the settlements the
first tradesman needed was the miller. One of the first, and possibly THE first
miller in the settlement beside the Peaked Mountain, was Jacob Harmon. The mill
was a gathering place for the community, a good place to catch up on the news
and gossip and a center for meeting friends."
Jacob died in May of 1764.
His will was entered into the court record on May 13, and reads in part as
follows:
IN
THE NAME OF GOD AMEN September the 18th 1761 I Jacob Harmon Senr of
the County of Augusta and Coloney of Virginia… I give and Bequeath…

Misc. Notes
Another
source suggests name was “Caterina Pauschen”. Another Catrina Mann. I have not
found any real evidence either way. (LFC)
