ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN QUAKER GENEALOGY, VOL. 2:
John HOUGH and his wife Hannah were members of the Falls
Monthly Meeting of the Quakers in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The Falls meeting
was organized in 1683. On page 961 of the Encyclopedia, John and Hannah are
recorded along with the birth dates of four of their children: Daniel born
4-14-1693; Isaac born 12-28-1694/5; Sarah born 4-31-1701; Joseph born
1-14-1703.
An early entry was reported (I have not verified –
Fred) for 1684, which may correspond with his arrival in the new land, and may
reflect his exuberance:
The Minutes
read " FEBRUARY 4, 1684, HE WAS "DEALT WITH" FOR FIGHTING AND
DRINKING INORDINATELY." He attended several marriages.
JOHN HOUGH of MIDDLETOWN died in JANUARY 1732, and was buried there, intestate, (without a will) and the court granted administration of the estate to son, John Hough Jr., (YE YOUNGER) on JANUARY 20, 1732. his return for the estate (CASE #55) on JUNE 17, 1736, shows a net value of over 244 Pounds. (SEE. O.C. AL: 68 FOR DISTRIBUTION OF FUNDS, AND FOR THE MARRIED NAMES OF THE DAUGHTERS).
Court Records:
The
"Records of the Courts of Quarter Sessions and Common Pleas of Bucks
County Pennsylvania 1684-1700", Colonial Society of Pennsylvania, 1943:

Daniel Hough
Owned land between Crum Creek and Darbvy Creek, next to Newton Twp., Bucks Co.,
PA.
In 1736
Daniel Hough was alive and well in Middletown at age 43, when his brother John
Hough Fr. refused to give him any of his father's estate since he "had
been advanced by his father, the said decedent, in his lifetime in estate by
settlement amounting to upwards of seventy pounds, exceeding the share of any
of the other children".
Daniel Hough
may, as several traditions have it all without a shred of proof "Gone off
in a Huff" to New Jersey (Across the Delaware River) and changed his name
to Huff. Where he stayed with the families of Thomas Hough a blood relative,
and George Gleave (Both were indentured to his father for passage to the
Colonies.) Furthermore, later members of this family did reside for a spell in
Burlington and Hunterdon Co., NJ

Misc. Notes
There are several references to a Daniel HUFF in the
Surry County, NC, Court Minutes (Part of Surry County became Stokes County in
1789 - - it was "Stokes" when he died.) However I now believe most of
these refer to this Daniel's son, Daniel III. (NEED to review in context of living next door
to Robert Walker and his brother David. See notes with Robert!)
One that MAY apply: On 16 August 1786 we find
"Ordered… Daniel HUFF be exempt from paying Poll Tax for future."
This was also common practice, when someone reached a certain age.
I had a tough time separating Daniel II from Daniel
III in many records. Daniel III (who is not our ancestor) married Elizabeth
Christie, and he then proceeded to name his children after his siblings,
resulting in two "Daniel Huff" families with lists of children with
identical names! Once sorted out, it became clear that the "Daniel
Huff" who is well documented in the Quaker minutes for Deep River and Deep
Creek Monthly Meetings is Daniel III.
Therefore, to
date, I have found few references to ancestor Daniel II.
