Sampson Kelley is listed as paying the Poll Tax.

 

WAR OF 1812:

Sampson Kelley is found in the "Roster of Ohio Soldiers in the War of 1812". He served in Capt. Phillip Kiser's Company. In the same company were his future son-in-law Ambrose Grafton (also our ancestor), and Ambrose'a brother James. They served in a regiment organized in Champaign County (Urbana).

 

1820 CENSUS, OHIO, CHAMPAIGN CO., JACKSON TWP:

Sampson Kelly (sic) is found living near Ambrose Grafton (who married his daughter). He and his wife have 4 other males and 4 other females living in the house (seems like too many).

“Sampson Kelley was born in Ireland in about 1773; he came to this country in 1791, aged eighteen years, and settled in Virginia. In 1806, he came to this township and settled on Chapman's Creek, entering the southwest quarter of Section 3, where William Merritt now lives. He brought his family, consisting of a wife and four daughters, His three sons, Joseph, William and Robert, were all born here. Joseph, the first named, was the first white child ever born in the township. His father cleared his farm and built a small cabin on it, but lived only a short time after his youngest child was born. After his death, his land was sold at administrator's sale, and only brought between $5 and $6 an acre.”

 

SECOND MARRIAGE:

Sampson was married a second time, after Margaret's death, on 1 Sep 1818, to Rebecca (DAVIS) PENCE, the widow of Jacob PENCE who was killed in the war of 1812. She was the daughter of Andrew Davis. Sampson and Rebecca had two additional children, Sarah Jane (1821) and Rebecca Ann (1826).
