Misc. Notes
Note by Timothy E. Peterman (2015)
Peter Kivett:
Peter Kivett (or Küwit) was born Jul. 1726 in Germany. Passenger lists
show that in Sep. 1749, he arrived in Philadelphia, PA, having embarked from
Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Many Palatinate Germans traveled to
Pennsylvania through the port of Rotterdam. On Sep. 22, 1763, Peter
Kivett was naturalized at the Salisbury, NC District Court. He was
described as a native of Germany. A large group of Pennsylvania Germans
settled in Randolph Co., NC during the 1750s and afterwards.
Service: Patriot, furnished supplies for the militia. He died Sep.
28, 1794 in Randolph Co., NC. In about 1749, he married Anna Barbara
_____. She was born Oct. 28, 1729 and died Jul. 26, 1797. Anna
Barbara's surname may have been Staley or Rausch. If Staley (or Stähli),
she would have been the daughter of Ulrich Johannes Jakob Stähli (1700-1776),
who moved to Pennsylvania from Switzerland in 1732. Staley descendants
moved to Randolph Co., NC. If Rausch, she would have been the daughter of
Peter Rausch, and sister of Eva Margaretha (Rausch) Emich/ Amick of Randolph
Co., NC. Peter Kivett had 8 children: Charity (ca 1750-1835), Henry
(ca 1753-1806), John (ca 1755-1843), Jacob (ca 1759-1810, Barbary (ca
1761-1837), Elizabeth (ca 1762-ca 1835), Peter Jr. (1765-1835), and Ann
Margaret (ca 1765-1837).
FIND-A-GRAVE MEMORIALS
MCMASTERS CEMETERY, RANDOLPH COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA:
This
cemetery is maintained by the “Peter Kivett Family Association”. It includes a
number of Memorials dedicated to the Family. Most of the following is extracted
from those memorials:
“Peter
(Küwit) KIVETT I German Immigrant came to America arriving at the port of
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1749. The following ships' lists of eighteenth
century "Kivett" arrivals at the Port of Philadelphia, cited in
Pennsylvania German Pioneers:
"On the
15th Sep 1749, in the Ship Edinburgh, from Rotterdam but last from Portsmouth
in England...from the Palatinate: Peter Küwit."
“There are
many variations of this surname: Kivet, Kevet, Kevit, Kivette, Kevett, Kiviet,
Civit, Cieviet, Ciewits, Cavat, Gevell, Gubrit, Küwit and Kibit.
“Peter
(Küwit) KIVETT I age twenty three married on 1749 Anna Barbary (Staehli) STALEY
age twenty in Bern, Berks County, Pennsylvania. It is believed that they soon
moved into the German community of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. By 1755 or perhaps
as early as 1753 Peter (Küwit) KIVETT I and Anna Barbary (Staehli) STALEY with
their first daughter migrated south to Colonial North Carolina with numerous
other German families.
“Anna
Barbary (Staehli) STALEY is the daughter of Ulrich Johannes Jacob (Stehle)
Staehli STALEY and his wife Anna Maria GERMANN.
“The
tombstone (Photo above) in the McMasters Cemetery near Liberty, North Carolina,
states that Peter was born in July, 1726, and died September 28, 1794. It is
positive he was an immigrant from Germany. The record of Peter's naturalization
has been preserved in colonial Rowan County, North Carolina documents. On
September 22, 1763, Peter, along with 33 others, appeared in Salisbury District
Court of Colonial Rowan County, North Carolina to swear their allegiance to the
British Crown:
"This
day came into Open Court the following persons Natives of Germany and were
Naturalized according to Law by the Oaths appointed for that purpose...to
wit...Peter Kevett."
“This
evidence is extremely convincing that Peter was, in fact, a "native of
Germany."
“The
earliest records place Peter Kivett in Colonial Rowan and Orange County (now
Randolph County, North Carolina). The recorded history reveals that the central
Piedmont area of North Carolina, which includes Randolph County, was largely
settled by those whose first home had been Pennsylvania, where they disembarked
from their sailing ships. They migrated south, using the Great Wagon Road*
established from old Indian trails from eastern Pennsylvania in Philadelphia
through Lancaster, York and western Maryland to across the Potomac River at a
ford leading into Old Colonial Fredrick County, Virginia. Then these migrants
turned south down the Shenandoah Valley, across Natural Bridge, through the
Appalachian Mountain range at Roanoke Virginia to take up new lands in central
North Carolina. According to North Carolina land grants these migrations
primarily began in the mid 1750's. The primary four groups were the Quakers,
the Scots-Irish, English and the Germans.

LFC NOTE:
After the early death of her first husband, Jacob Kivett, Polly married Isaac
Aldridge, who would have been a first cousin of her deceased husband.
It then
appears that Polly herself died shortly thereafter (from the dates, I would
speculate that she died in childbirth). At that time, Samuel Aldredge, an uncle
of Jacob (his mother’s brother) was appointed guardian of Jacob and Polly’s
minor children. See notes with Jacob Kivett for more.
