Notes for
Matthew McGlasson:
From Matthew
McGlasson's Revolutionary War Pension Claim File (National Archives) S.15530: (File
is available on Ancestry.com) Matthew McGlasson was born 3 January 1756 in
Buckingham County, Virginia. While residing there he enlisted in October, 1778,
and served 3 months as a private in Capt. Harden Perkins' company (reported to
be guarding prisoners of war), Colonel Charles May's Virginia regiment. He
moved to Amelia County, Virginia, and enlisted in February 1780 and served as a
private in Capt. William Ford's company, Colonel John Calloway's Virginia
regiment and was in the battle of Camden and several skirmishes, serving until
August, 1781. He moved back to Buckingham County, and served about 10 days in
Capt. Robert Cary's company, Colonel Cabell's Virginia regiment, and about 20
days as orderly sergeant in Capt. John Crouch's company, Colonel Dugit's
regiment. When he was drafted in September of 1781 he hired a substitute, as
his wife was sick.
Soon after
the war he moved to Charlotte County, Virginia, then to Campbell County, and in
1813, to Cumberland County, Kentucky. He was allowed pension on his application
executed 1 October 1832, at which time he was living in Adair County, Kentucky.
He referred to his wife as living during his service, but her name is not shown
and there is no reference to children. His certificate was issued 7th February
1834.

ANOTHER ANCESTRY.COM SOURCE:
"Drafted
in 1778 from Buckingham Co. Va. under Col Charles May, to guard prisoners of
war at Albemarle Co. Va. Near Charlettesville. Discharged Jan 1779. Drafted in
1780 under Capt M Ford then under Col JOhn Callooway i North Carolina where
they engaged General Gates Army and was defeated he was wounded in this battle.
He was then marched to Coffin Point, Va where they again engaged the British
after the burning of McKay Mills. He was discharged in 1781. Drafted again in
Sept 1781 He furnished a subs(ti)tute to take his place.
1810 CENSUS, KY, CASEY CO.:
There is a
"Matthew M. Glason" in the census, but he appears too young. This
family has 3 males under 10, one male 26-45, one female under 10, and one
felame 26-45. The man we want would be about age 54. But maybe age is wrong,
see 1830 census?
1820 CENSUS, KY, ADAIR CO:
Did find an
index entry for "Mathew MeGlasson", although original nearly
unreadable. This man is age 45+, wife 26-45, with 2 males and 1 female under
10.
1830 CENSUS, KY, ADAIR CO.:
There is a
Matthew McGlasson in the county, but it’s not a perfect match. This Matthew is
age 60-70, and the one we want should be age 74. However this is probably the
right person, and an error was made on age. This Matthew has a wife the same
age, and two males, one age 10-15 (could be son Jacob) and one age 15-20 (hired
help?). They have no slaves.
