NOTE: See discussion with daughter Jane and son-in-law Marmaduke BARNES. There were a lot of family issues in the 1840's that impacted the whole family, including Robert and Sarah.

Evidence is that he was born in Pennsylvania. However he was in Woodford Co., KY, no later than 1811, when his first daughter Jane was born. (The family of his wife, Sarah, was found in that county in the 1810 census and are reported to have moved there in 1803.)

1820 CENSUS, KENTUCKY, WOODFORD CO:

Robert and his wife (right ages) are there. They have 2 sons ages 0-9, that would be John and Peter. They have 4 daughters ages 0-9, but I only know of three – Jane, Sarah, and Mary. And they have one female slave. His father-in-law Peter Alexander is on the previous line. There are 29 people in Peter's household, including 10 male slaves and 8 female slaves.

1830 CENSUS, KENTUCKY, WOODFORD CO:

Robert and family are shown in this census, with 8 children at home. The head count and ages match nicely with the genealogy included herein.

1840 CENSUS, INDIANA, PUTNAM CO., MADISON TWP:

Robert and Sarah are found, with four children still living at home (three sons, plus youngest daughter Catherine).

1850 CENSUS, INDIANA, PARKE CO., ADAMS TWP.:

See notes with daughter, Jane. In the 1850 census Robert and his wife are living in same household with Jane and her six children. Robert is age 66, born in PA, and is a farmer. However Jane apparently owns the farm, worth $600. All names and ages for everyone are consistent with our data. On the census Robert claims to have been born in Pennsylvania, not in Kentucky as some sources show.

1853 MOVE TO IOWA, AWAITING FAMILY:

As discussed with his daughter Jane, Robert and Sarah moved with daughter Jane’s family to Iowa in about 1853. And as noted below their sons Peter and Samuel moved a year or two earlier.

There’s also another large “colony” of relatives in Mahaska County, Iowa, which is about 60 miles north of Davis County. There are more than 60 “family” already there: The 1850 and 1860 census reveals that in approximately 1846 Robert’s brothers Abraham and James moved to Mahaska County, Iowa. Abraham had been married twice, and had 22 children – his second wife and 9 kids were with him in his household. James had also been married twice, had 19 children – his second wife and 9 children were there. Plus three of Abraham’s adult sons moved with their families: Robert (4 kids), Alexander (6 kids) and John (7 kids).

We find land records in Putnam county, Indiana showing that Robert and Sarah were living there 15 April, 1847, date of a Warranty Deed Book "M" p. 231, Putnam County, IN Jan 1847

LFC NOTE: I found two land patents issued to Robert McMains in Putnam Co., IN, dated 3/20/1837 and 9/10/1838.

1856 IOWA CENSUS, UNION TWP, DAVIS CO, IOWA:

Robert “Mc Meins” and Sarah are ages 69 and 65. He has been in the state for 3 years. The 1856 census also indicated that Samuel McMains had been in the state for 5 yrs., and Peter Alexander McMains for 4 yrs., so Robert and Sarah came after the two sons came to Davis County, IA.

1860 CENSUS, IOWA, DAVIS CO, WYACONDA TWP:

Robert McMain is age 75, a farmer, with real estate worth $2440. Sarah is 68. Living with them is John age 36 (and marked "Insane"). They live on an adjacent property to Samuel McMains, age 38, who would be his son. Davis County includes son Samuel (wife and 7 children) and son Peter (wife and 7 children).

FIND-A-GRAVE:

Robert McMain is buried in Wesley Chapel Cemetery (South), Wyacondah, Davis County, IA. Died “Sep. 9, 1868 Aged 82y 1m 24d”.  Cemetery location lat/long 40.675 -92.465.
