Misc. Notes

(MIXED INTERNET SOURCES)

He emigrated from Heykoop, Netherlands about 1641 to New Amsterdam.

Captain Aert Teunissen Middagh was born in Heicop, South Holland and emigrated to New Amsterdam- America prior to 24 Oct. 1654. He received a patent for one hundred acres of land on Wallabout Bay, Long Island, which is now in the borough of Brooklin -New York City. The Captain returned briefly to Holland in May of 1661; and returned to Brooklyn on ye ship "Beaver". It is known he and his family made other trips back to Holland and that some of his children were born there.

Aert is listed as a communicant of the Brooklyn DRC on 4/9/1664 and as a member of the church from 1677 to 1685. On 3/1/1660 he and others petitioned the government to allow them to form the village of Brooklyn. His wife Brechtje was a communicant of the Brooklyn Church on 4/2/1662.

Captain Middagh was the Captain of "ye Breuckelen Troops", a provincial militia in Brooklyn from 1663. Captain Middagh's wife was Breckje Hansen Bergen, the daughter of Hans Hansen Bergen of Long Island and New Jersey. Her mother was the famous Sara de Rapalje, the first child born in New Netherlands. Breckje was a native of New Netherland, being baptized in New Amsterdam on July 27, 1642. She was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn, joining in 1662.

Considered very well off, Captain Middagh drafted a petition to the Council of New Netherlands on March 1, 1660 requesting: "lands to form a village on the margin of the river in a place so that we may be in sight of Manhatans or Fort Amsterdam. The request was granted, and the village of Keike ("Lookout") being thus established.

Aert was possibly the orphaned son of Gysbert Theunise Bogaert and Aertje Bastiaens, raised by Gysbert's sister Neeltje and her husband Gysbert Middagh, which would explain use of Middagh as surname.

Although shown on passenger list in 1661 on ship Der Bever, he is believed to have first come to America ca. 1652. possibly in company of Theunise Gysbert Bogaert, who was possibly his uncle (many believe he was Aert's father).

Aert was a neighbor of Theunise Bogaert, who eventually married the widowed Sarah DeRapalie. Aert married Sarah's oldest daughter Breckje.

Occupation: Probably trader or merchant, as he made many trips back and forth to Holland.

Middagh means midday in both Dutch and Norwegian.
