Misc. Notes
Ancestry.com
offers several hundred references to this person, who married Judick Rapalje.
There are multiple spellings of his name, and also the name of his wife. The
references come with multiple variations on children, also with multiple name
spellings. (Because there are so many "choices" regarding the
children, and because I have limited ability to judge whose account is
"correct", I have chosen to simply list the one child that is part of
our ancestry.)
Among the
other issues, a significant percentage claim he was born at what is now Albany,
NY. However none of these document any of their assumptions, so I am more
prepared to believe "Netherlands".
Despite all
the different information variations, it does seem clear that this was indeed a
real person, and one of the earliest settlers of the New Amsterdam colony, and
one of our family ancestors.
Following
are a selection of "facts" about this ancestor. Many are quite
plausible, and perhaps some are actually true. I simply don't have the
expertise to judge. There have been many books written about the earliest
settlers in the area, and the reader might want to consider his own research:
HISTORY: VARIATION 1:
Name: Pieter
Pietersen Van Nest
Death: 20 MAR 1697
in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York
Birth: ABT 1625 in
Nes, Ameland Island, Friesland, the Netherlands
Emigration: 1647 Nes,
Ameland Island, Friesland, the Netherlands
Note: Settled in
Brooklyn, Kings County, New York.
Note:
The Van Nest family was originally from the Netherlands, and
the name is variously spelled in colonial records as van Ess, van Ness, van
Nest, and van Neste. The pioneer in America, Pieter Van Nest, resided at the
time of his emigration in Nes, one of three villages on the island of Ameland,
off Friesland, between which province and the island lies De walden Sound.
Members of the van Nest family became illustrious in ancient days, one, in the
sixteenth century, acting as Councilor of William the Silent, Prince of Orange.
Vice-Admiral van Nest took part in the famous expedition against England in
1666, engaging in the battle off North Foreland, Kent. His ships, and those of
Admiral Tromp, were so badly crippled that they had to be abandoned, but the
commanders survived and led brilliantly until obliged to retreat. The following
year, 1667, Admiral van Nest blocked the mouth of the Thames, while Admiral De
Ruyter threatened the English Coast, causing consternation and terror there.
HISTORY: VARIATION 2:
Pieter came from Holland and settled in the area known as New Amsterdam, now New York. He was a member of the Convention Holders in New Amsterdam. Their primary funcion was to engage the several Dutch towns to keep up an armed force for protection. He was a member of the Collegiate Dutch Reformed Church since 1640. He took Oath Of Allegiance to Breukeland, i.e., Brookyn. The family bible was printed in Leyden, Holland.

Church

Bergen Hudson Companies of New Jersey."Dutch Families Around Albany, and
Colonial Families of the U.S.A." by George W. Mc Kenzie
HISTORY: VARIATION 3:
Birth: ABT. 1630
in Utrecht, Netherlands.
Death: 20 MAR
1697/98 in Brooklyn, N. Y.
Pieter came to Brooklyn
in1647 from he Netherlands. It is probable that Pieter died prior to 1698 as
his wife was listed that year as a head of a family. His name appears on the
assessment rolls of Brooklyn in 1675, 1676, and 1683. He was a member of the
Wallabout on Dominie Van Zurens church lists in 1677. He took the oath to the
English throne in 1687. He signed his name Pieter Petersen Van Nest or later
generations used Van Neste briefly. He died in March 20, 169?, buried in
Brooklyn.
The record of the family of Pieter and Judith is from an
ancient Dutch Bible, which was printed in 1637. A copy of it is in the Special
Collections Dept. of the Alexander Library, Rutgers University, New Brunswick,
New Jersey.

VARIATION 4:
Pieter Pieterszen VAN NESTE born circa 1625, married circa 1652, (to) Judith Jorise RAPALJE, born 05 Jul 1635, New Amsterdam, (daughter of Joris Jansen RAPALJE and Catalyntie TRICO) died 21 May 1726, Somerset County, N.J. Pieter died 20 Mar 1697, Breuckelen, N.Y. An excellent series of articles on the "Van Neste Family" appear in the "Somerset County Genealogical Quarterly", beginning with Vol. 2, No. 1, March 1984 [herein SCGQ]. This Quarterly is largely written and is published by Fred Sisser, III, a professional genealogist, who is also a trustee of the New Jersey Genealogical Society. Copies of the Articles on the Van Neste Family may be found in a bound volume in Special Collections, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, N.J. In the articles Sisser also gives his references and also a good bit of data on each of the early generations covered.
