CAUTION:
There is
doubt that this person is actually an ancestor, because it depends on whether
his descendant Elizabeth STANSELL, wife of Peter BARBRE, was Peter's first wife
and the mother of Peter's son Jesse BARBRE. See discussion with file on Peter
BARBRE.
Misc. Notes
The name Stancill has been spelled many ways, Stancell,
Stancil, Stansel, Stansele, Stansell, and Stanzel.
It is not known whether John Stancill, Jr. was born before or after the family moved from Virginia to North Carolina. His wife's maiden name was Sarah Godfrey Smithwick and this appears to be the first record of the name "Godfrey" which has subsequently appeared quite often. The Smithwick family was very prominent in the area of the Roanoke River east of Williamston. They were the leaders in the establishment of Martin County from Tyrell, Hertford and Edgecome, and the town of Williamston as the county seat in the 1770's. Even now some three hundred years later some members of the Smithwick family continue to possess some of this same land.
The island section across the Roanoke from Cashie Neck were
the family lived some years has always been subject to serious flooding and
crop loss. This probably accounts for the comparatively short stay of the
Stancills in this area. Cashie Neck also has been swamp land and low farm land.
Correspondence from settlers in those areas contained in historical documents
reveals that the residents were constantly complaining of malaria.
Edenton was the center of commerce during the period the
Stancills were in the Roanoke Area. The town of Williamston was not settled
until 1774, long after the Stancills had left.
Charleton Creek and Cut Cypress Gut are the first two
tributaries from the Roanoke and both lead into Cashie Neck. These would have
been the natural routes settlers in this area used to get to the high tillable
land had they come from England or Eastern Virginia by boat.
This is the way a typical deed read in the early days:
"On the 10th day of December in the 5th year of the reign of our Soverign
Lord King George of Great Brittain and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Anno
Domino 1720, John Stancill and wife Sarah conveyed to Thomas Madkife of Cecile
County, Maryland, 388 acres in Kisa Neck on the North side of Morratock
River." This deed is recorded in Book F1, page 115, Chowan County records.
