Misc. Notes
NOTE: All the
discussion that follows was copied from work by Betty Vermillion Donoho, who
advised "I have worked on the Vermillion family history for 45 years and
am willing to share all that I have." And she clearly knows more about
Giles than anyone:
"Giles
Vermill was indentured to James Green at a Prince George’s County Court, held
at Charles Town on the twenty eighth day of March, Sixteen Hundred and Ninety
Nine. He was adjudged to be thirteen years of age. This is the earliest record of the name to be
found in the Archival Records of Maryland. It is generally assumed that the
name is spelled Vermillion as it usually appears as such in later official
records, although, it is sometimes spelled with only one l. How would a
thirteen year old boy, of supposedly French origin, pronounce his name to a
clerk in a court in Sixteen Hundred and Ninety Nine? It could be Vermille,
Vermilye, Vermile, Vermuyden, Vermilia, Vermulen, etc. The clerk would write
what he heard. Even the first letter V has frequently been confused with P, F,
D and so forth. This brings to mind many questions – who was he? Who was
his father, his mother? How did he or
his parents come to this country, this colony? His name does not appear on the
passenger lists of the ships which brought the early settlers to Maryland. It
is not found among those who came to St. Mary’s with Lord Baltimore nor is it
found on the lists of the Puritans who came to the Severn River from Virginia
in 1649. At that time Anne Arundel County was virtually a wilderness and did
not exist as a county. Of course, all settlers did not come in groups and, by
1650, the population of the whole colony was still less than one thousand.
"Gregory A. Wood has studied extensively
the history of the French in early Maryland and has reported this in his work,
The French Presence in Maryland 1524 - 1800. The Vermillion name is unknown to
him. He stated, “I suspect that Giles is either Huguenot or British of Norman
French ancestry like many early Marylanders.” He further states that unless
early colonists had themselves naturalized, were appointed to public office or
were land owners, their names did not get into the records and, therefore, we
have little knowledge of them.
"In 1650, William Burgess brought Maureen
Duval and a group of Huguenots to the
Severn River and other groups of Huguenots came later. Could Giles parents have
been among them? Since he was indentured by a court, one wonders if he was an
orphan. The answers to these questions may never be known, but the facts seem
to discredit the assumption of many researchers that he was one of three
brothers or that he came by way of England, Scotland or Wales as an adventurer.
"His descendents, although widely
dispersed throughout the country, usually believe that they are of French
origin. This is a belief shared by the writer. There are approximately two
thousand families in the United States with the Vermillion name , many of which
are well researched, and they all seem to be descended from Giles and his wife,
Jane.
"Giles next appeared in the church
records of King George’s Parish, also
known as Piscataway or St. John’s at Broadcreek
in Prince George’s County when he registered his eight children in 1723.
His ninth and last child, Robert, was born in 1725. The present spelling of the
name was first used by the minister who registered them.
He is also
found in a list of taxables in The Black Books of Maryland:
Tax Records of 1719 – Lower Piscataway
Hundred
Giles Vermillion
Tax Records of 1733 – Lower Piscataway
Hundred
James Vermillion – 2
James, Jon, Giles V. –
3
Giles is
found in a list of Maryland deponents
on 19 October 1730:
Vermulen – Giles
19 October 1730 –
Deposition taken re: Abington vs. Stoddard
1. Giles Vermulen of Prince George’s County,
age c 45
"He is
again deposed five years later with the same information as above only his age
is given as fifty. There is an undocumented story, which states that Jane was
the daughter of William Hutchison, believed to be the partner of James Green,
the planter to whom Giles was indentured. No record of this has been found by
this researcher and the genealogy of the Hutchinson family contains no Jane. It
is believed that their daughter, Jane, born 6 April 1716, must have died early
because a later daughter, born 29 April 1720, was named Jane.
"Another
unsubstantiated story states that Giles left Maryland with his son, John, and
settled in Petersburg, Henrico County, Virginia where they engaged in iron
mining. A professional genealogist, Captain Brushy of Annapolis, Maryland,
hired by Francis Faye Vermillion of Bristol, Connecticut, is quoted as saying
“John, born 1712, brother of Robert, born 1725, achieved prominence in Norfolk,
Virginia and elsewhere in the Colony and later in the Commonwealth.” Captain
Brushy is not quoted as giving sources. Generally, Captain Brushy’s research
conforms to that of this writer, especially that of the eighteenth century
taken from the records of St.John’s at Broadcreek, the Maryland Census of 1776
and the Courthouse Records at Upper Marlboro.

1778.
1776 CENSUS: PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY,
ST. JOHN'S AND PRINCE GEORGE'S PARISHES:
Yes, there
WAS a 1776 census in certain parts of the colonies, and the part for the above
parishes is available in facsimilie in "Maryland Records: Colonial,
Revolutionary, County and Church from Original Sources" by Gaius Marcus
Brumbaugh, M.S., M.D., 1915. Some parts of this census are extremely detailed,
giving the names and ages of every person in the household, including slaves!
The page
that includes our Vermillion ancestors is less detailed than some, but still
better than anything available elsewhere before 1850. Robert Vermilion and wife
Elizabeth Vermilion are named. Their household includes males aged 51, 19, 16,
13 and 10, and females aged 47, 27 and 24 (surprising to see that the two
oldest daughters are still living at home). And it includes one female slave,
age 7.
The same
census also includes two of Robert's brothers, Giles (1708-1776) and Thomas
(1718 - ?).
The census
date was August 31, 1776. The grand totals for the two parishes are as follows:
19 Free Blacks under age 16; 36 Free Blacks above 16; 885 white males between
16 and 50; 1380 white males under 16; 159 white males above age 50; 2562 white
females; 1605 slaves above age 16; 1795 slaves under age 16. (Interesting
observations: The population is 40% slave, and the median age for both whites
and slaves is clearly under age 16.)
Prince
George's County today is effectively an eastern suburb of Washington, DC. Only
27% of the population is under age 18, and it is 66% black. The population is
about 800,000.

Misc. Notes
Most of this
information on Birch Vermillion, and his descendants other than our direct
family line (through Robert), was obtained from Nancy Granros, Miami, FL, whom
I met in the early 1980’s through my Atari Computer Club and who turned out to
be a distant cousin. She is a descendant
of Henderson Vermillion, one of Birch's sons, through his marriage to Dorothy
French.
There are
some spelling differences between her records an mine, i.e. Vermillion vs.
Vermilion; and McGlasson vs. McGlauson She has more information on the
descendants of William, Cornelious, Joel and particularly Henderson.
A will written by a John Harris, Sr., Prince
Georges County Maryland, September 2, 1775, which is witnessed by Robert
Vermillion and Burch Vermillion.
1820 CENSUS, KENTUCKY, MERCER COUNTY:
Burch
Vermillion is found, with spouse of right age. Children are confusing. Living
nearby are his known sons Joshia, Nickademus, and Henderson - - suggesting this
is clearly the correct Burch Vermillion.
1830 CENSUS, KENTUCKY, MERCER CO:
Burch is not
listed, but he would be about age 70 and quite possibly living with one of his
sons. Living in the county are sons Josiah, Nicholas, Henderson, Joel, and
William. Joshia, who lives near Nick, has two older people in his household who
would be about the right ages to be Burch and his wife. Henderson, William and
Joel also live near each other, but have no older family members.
RUSSELL COUNTY TAX LISTS
Birch Vermillion
is in the 1833 tax list. He has a valuation of $100.
1840 CENSUS, PIKE CO, MO:
Sons Reason
and Nicodemus and their families are found in this census. Frances Birch
Vermillion apparently died in this county in about 1842 in the home of his son
Reason, but neither of these sons have members of their household of the right
age to be their father.
Also in the
1840 census, Pike County, is Cynthia Vermillion. She is the widow of Burch’s
son Josiah, who’s will was filed 28 Aug 1839. (Josiah’s will names “Rezin
Vermillion & Nichodemus Vermillion, bros, of Pike Co & one or more bros
elsewhere, residence not known”.)
PROBATE RECORDS:
Tim Peterman
reports probate records for Burch Vermillion were filed on 1 Mar 1842 in the
Pike Co, MO probate court.
“State of
Missouri County of Pike
Resin
Vermillion being sworn upon his oath says that Cornelius Vermillion, the heirs
of Josiah Vermillion, Nicodemus Vermillion, Reson Vermillion, living in Pike
County, and Robert Vermillion &
Henderson Vermillion, living in the state of Kentucky, & Mason Vermillion’s
heirs, Cornelius Vermillion and Isaiah Vermillion, William Vermillion, Joel
Vermillion living in the State of Indiana, are the only heirs and legal
representatives of Burch Vermillion deceased, to the best of his knowledge
& belief, that the deceased died without a will…”

Only

gives the name of Nancy GRIFFITH.
ANCESTRY.COM, VERMILLION AND ALLIED
FAMILIES OF SW VIRGINIA:
has note
“Nancy’s first husband was a Griffith”. It then gives more plausible birth
details, which I have used for this entry.
Other sources have same info, one says “Nancy's maiden name was Lambert.
She married a man named Griffith then became a widow. Nancy Griffith was
Welch.”
The same
source, however, suggests Burch was married a second time to Ann Wood. And
marriage records for Prince George's County do indeed show that Francis Burch
Vermillion married Ann Wood 30 Oct 1780
I see also that Tim Peterman indicates Francis Birch Vermillion’s wife
was “Ann (?) Williams”. Obviously some questions here!

Misc. Notes
1820 CENSUS, CUMBERLAND CO., KY:
The 1820
census shows a Robert Vermillion living in Cumberland Co., KY, Creelsborough
Twp. Family of 5 males and 3 females. Age and sex distribution is close to what
I would expect, but not perfect. There is one female that is too old, could be
another relative living with them? Children are 4 males and 1 female, which
doesn’t exactly match. However our basic data on the children is questionable,
so I think it likely this is the correct family.
1830 CENSUS, RUSSELL CO., KY:
Robt.
Vermilllion is found, with wife and 6 children living at home.
RUSSELL COUNTY TAX LISTS
Robert Vermillion
is in the 1833 tax list. He has 102 acres on the Crocus (creek?), with a
valuation of $366. Also on the list is his father, Birch Vermillion, with a
valuation of $100.
Robert did
not own slaves – although that may be in part because he could not afford
them. He was certainly touched by slavery. In 1834 the Russell County Court
ordered him (and 3 other men) to assist in appraising the value of the slaves
in the estate of one James J. Hays.
1840 CENSUS, RUSSELL CO., KY:
The 1840
census for Russell Co., KY, shows a Robert Vermilion (sic) of the right age.
There is also another male of the same age, maybe a brother. And a male the age
of son George. And a wife of the correct age. And 4 young females (daughters
Martha, Nancy, and Mary, plus an unidentified female age 15-19). And one older
female, perhaps a mother of Robert or wife Nancy?
(George is
also found in the 1850 census, same county, and married. Living with them is
“Jane Cunningham”, age 92 - probably his great aunt?)
THE ESTATE OF ROBERT VERMILLION:
In early
1846 Robert died. There was an appraisal of this estate. A particular curiosity
in the Vermillion appraisal is the category of "Provisions set apart for
the Widow". This includes 12 months bacon, 50 pounds of lard worth $3.00,
the growing crop of wheat worth $3.00, one half barrel of corn, four hogs worth
$5.50, one bed and furniture worth $8.00, one cowhide worth $1.00, and several
small items worth less than a dollar.
There was
also a sale of some of the property of Robert Vermillion, deceased, reported in
the court records. Many of the buyers were family, with Robert's widow Nancy
and his son George buying several items. And one active buyer was Robert's
son-in-law Newton Coffey. Newton bought a sythe blade ($0.75), a bedstead
($10.00), a mare ($20.00), tobacco ($0.25), and a hide ($0.62).

with his son-in-law Newton Eli Coffey for additional information.
