Decatur County Journal

'AN OLD SCHOOL REPORT'
“J.N.
MACHLAN, of Franklin Township, kindly furnished the JOURNAL with a report of a
school taught by HELEN M. WHITNEY during the winter of l863 and '64. At that
time the school house was located on the NATHAN PERDEW farm, afterwards owned
by B.Y. WALKER and now owned
by F.P. MORELAND. The building was finally moved to W.A. MACHLAN's farm and
used by him as a residence for several years.
According to the report, school began December 7,
l863, and continued two months. Thirty-nine pupils were enrolled whose ages
ranged from 5 to l8 years. The oldest pupil was ROBERT DOWNY, aged l8, and the
youngest were IRENA CLINKENBEARD and FRANCIS CLARK, each aged 5 years. The
branches taught were orthography, reading, writing, arithmetic, grammar and
geography. The members of the geography class were GEO. W. SAMSON, EDGAR CURRY
and MALINDA WALKER. The members of
the grammar class were CYRUS WALKER,
MARY MCINTIRE, ALBERTO CLARK, EDWIN SAMSON, MATILDA DOWNY, MALINDA WALKER* and EMMA ROBERTS. “ *(Elizabeth Malinda Walker,
Cyrus’ sister.)
Note from Leon, Iowa, newspaper (unknown
date) -
"Cyrus
Walker, of Franklin township, visited the Journal office Monday afternoon. He is feeding twenty-two head of steers and
eighty head of hogs. He cultivated
ninety acres in corn during the last season and the yield was over 4,000
bushels. Mr. Walker has a fine farm of
320 acres which he could sell for $75 per acre.
Nine years ago he bought 160 acres of his land for one dollar & 25
cents per acre. Republican prosperity
has made dozens of men in our county like Mr. Walker comparatively wealthy.
Decatur County Journal: September
25, l902
CYRUS WALKER
has lived in this county and on the place he now owns for 45 years. He was
married in l872 to LAURA E. MYERS. They have three children, all single. MRS. WALKER died last
May and daughter DAISY keeps house for
him and one son that is at home. MR. WALKER has taken the JOURNAL ever since it
was established in l869.
Notes from Geraldine Walker Wooley
Binning -
“Our grandad
Cyrus bought a farm South & a little East of his father's farm, near where
the Popcorn school was located. He had
320 acres of some of the best laying land in Decatur County.
“When Uncle
Virgil was a baby their house burned one night.
Grandma carried him to a neighbor's home over 1/2 mile away in the cold
- I heard only in their night-clothes.
They saved nothing from the house but two wood kitchen chairs. Your mother (Elsie) had one and I had the
other one.
“Later they
built the nice big house that is still standing & in good condition on the
farm. It was built with two stairways;
one opened into the kitchen and the other into the living room. Elsie was born in this house.
“His
daughter Daisy earned a degree from Drake University in music. She taught music for quite some time. Uncle
Virgil attended college. He lived in
Rochester, New York and dealt in stocks and bonds. I saw him very few times.
“Grandad
married the second time. Aunt Daisy
didn't want him to, said she would stay at home and care for him. He married Delia Butts - her first husband
died. She had a son & a
daughter. She talked grandad into
selling his nice farm, and they moved to Long Beach, California. They lived there until his death, and grandad
was brought by train to Van Wert for burial.
Guess her two kids got what grandad had.” (NOTE: See 1910 census below
– they moved to Idaho before California, and his father lived with them
for a while.)

notes for “B.Y.” regarding birth location.
1870 CENSUS, DECATUR CO., FRANKLIN
TWP., IOWA:
Although he
got indexed as “Bartletz”, the census taker meant “Bartlet Y”. He is age 50, a
farmer, with real estate worth $7750 and other property worth $1916, born in
North Carolina. His wife Frances is age 38 (obviously she ages slowly!) born in
Virginia. Children are Cyras (age 22,
worth $325), Washington (20), William C. (18), and Claborn A. (15). All
the boys are listed as Farm Laborers, but the youngest two have been attending
school as well.
1880 CENSUS, DECATUR CO., OTHER TWP:
Cyrus is age
32, and a farmer. Laura is 27. At home are children Vergil age 5, and Dasie age
1. Cyrus was born in Illinois, and his father and mother in North Carolina and
Virginia. Laura was born in Ohio, and her father and mother in Ohio and
Pennsylvania. The children were all born in Iowa.
1900 CENSUS, DECATUR CO., FRANKLIN
TWP (WELDON):
Cyrus is age 53, Laura is 46. She has had three children, and all are still living. Still at home are Daisy, a school teacher, and Everett, a farm laborer. They also have a boarder, Bert Redmund, age 19, working as a farm laborer. They own their farm, and have a mortgage on it.
1910 CENSUS, IDAHO, WASHINGTON CO.,
EAST WEISER PCT:
Cyrus Walker is age 63, this is his second marriage, and he has been married 5 years. His wife is Adelia, age 47, and this is also her second marriage. She has had two children, was born in Wisconsin. Living with them is Bartlett Y. Walker, the father of Cyrus. He is age 90, and has also been married twice. Cyrus is a farmer, Bartlett has "own income".
(Memo: Once
I discovered they had been in Idaho, I was able to find the Idaho Death Index
for Bartlett. He died in 1912, so Cyrus and Adelia were clearly in Idaho at
least from 1910 to 1912.)
1920 CENSUS, CALIFORNIA, SAN DIEGO
CO., SAN DIEGO:
Cyrus is 72,
Adelia E. is 57. There is no doubt this is the correct “Cyrus”, given birth
places of parents, etc.

In the year
1886 she united with the M.E. church at Van Wert, Iowa. The cause of her death was paralysis, and
because of the suddenness of the attack none of the relatives were present at
the last except her husband and youngest son.
Others were summoned and came immediately.
Her last
words were "I see the angels and am going home." At the time of her death she was 48 years, 10
months and 24 days old. On Friday
morning, May 30, a large number of relatives and friends gathered at the old
homestead and after a short but appropriate service followed the remains to the
M.E. church Van Wert, Iowa, where the casket was completely covered with the
most exquisite flowers brought as a tribute of respect by loving friends. Rev. E. B. Heaton, of Indianola, preached the
funeral sermon, after which the remains were lain to rest in the Van Wert
Cemetery. She leaves a husband, two
sons, one daughter, three sisters and three brothers to mourn her departure.
