Misc. Notes

From the book, "The Westbrook Family of New York," by William E. Westbrook, 2101 40th Avenue, San Francisco, California, 94116. 1972:

Anthony Jansen Westbroek and his wife, Orseltie Dirks, are the progenitors of this New York Westbrook family. They were married about 1658 or 1659. They had a tavern and resided at Flatbush on Long Island, and at Albany, New York.; Their names appear in over 125 colonial records during the period April 23, 1658 to December 22, 1678; many of these records have not been published.

We note that other persons from the village of Westbroek, The Netherlands, contracted with Kiliaen van Rensselaer for employment in the colony of Rensselaerswijck, now Albany, New York, one of whom was Jan Teunisen, a carpenter; and that Jan Teunisen may properly name his son Anthony Jansen in keeping with the Dutch custom of family naming. Anthony Jansen is the only person who adopted the surname "Westbroek" when he was required to distinguish himself from other contemporary Anthony Jansens when the British controlled the colonies...

Ursul Dircks, a young daughter from Hamburg, living at the "Leuvenhaven," was first married to Jan Hendricksen, a young man, at Hillegersberg, near Rotterdam, on October 25, 1653, after a publication of the intended marriage on September 21, 1653. On August 29, 1655, a publication was made of the intended marriage of Tuenis Jacobs, a young man from Beeckum, living at the Pannekoestraaatt, and Orsel Dircks, the widow of Jan Hendricksen, living at the Niewe Gogelsang.

While in route to join her new husband at Albany, Ursul Dircks ordered some new clothes from Antony De Lorme, corner of Goldfwieghts and Broad Streets, New York on April 23, 1658, and received an advance of money in silver and gold.

On November 30, 1662, Antonis Jansen paid for the use of a small pall (casket), and on June 11, 1664, he again paid for the us of the pall. (From Burial Records of the First Dutch Reformed Church of Albany, 1654-1862.) The names of the two buried children are unknown.

The site of Anthony Jansen's tavern at Albany is described as a house, lot and garden, located on the south side of State Street, east of Broadway.

Anthony and Ursula were substantial citizens, perhaps due to the money she brought to the marriage. Their names appear quite often in early colonial records. .Anthony served as the court messenger at Albany and he and his wife operated taverns in both Albany and Flatbush.

Anthony was the first to use the name Westbook in America. His original name was Antoni Jansen and he was a Dutchman from a little fishing village called Westbroeck in Holland. He adopted the surname Van Westbrook after the English took over the Dutch colonies in 1664. Later the "Van" was dropped from his name. Prior to the English take over the Dutch did not use surnames. They took the given name of their father and added "sen" or "son" to it.

Event: On 27 Oct 1661, in Flatbush, New Netherlands, he bought, of Tielman Van Vleeck and Claes Gangeloff Villet, orphan master of New Amsterdam, in charge of the estate of Nicholas Volthuysen, a parcel of land in Flatbush on the East side of the road, cong. 18 morgens, with plain and meadow land abutting on Canarisie flats or plains, with 2 small house-plots.

Marriage:                 1658                       Flatbush, Kings County, NY

Spouse:                   Oersetlie (Ursula?) DIRCKS

Birth:                                                    Holland? Germany?

Death:                                                   Kingston, New York

Father:                     Dirck VOLKERTSEN (~1610-~1660)

Mother:                   Christine VIGNE (~1615-~1665)

Misc. Notes

Parents of Orseltie Dyrscks were Dirck Volkertsen and Christine Vigne. Dirck Volkertsen was born abt 1610 in Holland, died after 1660 New Amsterdam, NY, married Christine Vigne abt 1635 in New Amsterdam, NY, Christine was born about 1615 in Holland and died abt 1665 in New Amsterdam, NY.

Anthony Westbrook married Ursula Dircks,a well to do young widow who came over from Holland in 1658 on the ship "DeMoseman” to join her new husband. She must have known Anthony before as records seem to indicate that she came to America for the express purpose of marrying him. She had been married twice before and had two children by those previous marriages. Only one of those children grew to maturity. Her name was Ann who married Michael DeMott.

(CAUTION: This last sentence implies Anthony may not have been our ancestor! See the note about his wife’s previous marriages on the first page. There are a number of genealogies out there that propose her first husband, Jan Hendricksen, was the father of Ann, showing her birth as about 1654/5. And that is clearly plausible. However by far the largest number assume Anthony was her father. None seem to offer solid evidence one way or another, so I’ve left it alone for now. Fred Coffey.)
