The 1900 Census shows Virgil E. Walker, born in June of 1875, not married, with a father born in Illinois and a mother born in Ohio, is a student in Des Moines. The address is Oxford St., there are a large number of boarders there, with a mix of occupations but with “student” most common. The area is very near Grandview College. However I wrote to the college, and they had no record. Maybe he went to Drake? (The 1940 Census has an education code of “C3”, indicating he completed 3 years of college.)
It's amazing what one tiny clue can do for a genealogical search: Marilyn Shamp gave me that clue when she found a picture that said that "his wife was Emma"!
I had not previously been able to find him after the 1900 census. But I went back and told ancestry.com that I was looking for a Virgil E. Walker, born in Iowa, in about 1875, WITH A WIFE NAMED "EMMA". And I found him!
Marilyn may be right that he taught school in Iowa, but in 1910, 1920 and in 1930 he was living in Rochester, New York. The connection was confirmed when the 1930 census showed that his father was born in Illinois, and his mother in Ohio, and that fits perfectly with his parents Cyrus Walker and mother Laura Etta Myers. There are enough solid connections that I can be nearly 100% certain I've found the right person.
And he was working as a salesman. In 1920 he worked for a stockbroker, and in 1930 for an electric company. And he’s still in the same house in 1940.
Ultimately found a marriage record. He was married 1 Jun 1904 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, to Emma D Pettis. The record names his father as Cyrus Walker, and his mother as Laura Barnes (actually it was Laura Myers!).
And they had no children.
