1860 CENSUS, PENNSYLVANIA, GREENE CO., MORRIS TWP:
James M McCarl is age 8, living with his parents Joseph (Joshua?) and Eliza McCarl. See notes with his father for details.

1870 CENSUS, IOWA, CLINTON CO., WASHINGTON TWP:
Age is 16, living with parents. See notes with his father for details.

1880 CENSUS:
Lives in Decatur Co., Iowa, Long Creek Twp: James M. McCarl is 28 and a farmer, Ida May is 20 and keeping house. Living at home are Samuel age 4, and Fanny May Age 1. He was born in Pennsylvania, she was born in Illinois, both children were born in Iowa. Both his parents were born in Pennsylvania. Her father was born is Ohio, her mother in Virginia (?hard to read). They both can read and write. They appear to live next door to his brother William, age 23, who is sharing a house with his sister Florence, age 16. Index search shows these are the ONLY “McCarl” names in Decatur County.

1885 IOWA STATE CENSUS:
James M. and Ida McCarl still live in Decatur County, Long Creek Twp. Also present are children Samuel, Fannie & John (age 4 born in Missouri!)* -- can’t find 2 other children. Brother William still living nearby, appears to have 2 children, can’t figure out who is his wife. There is also at least one other McCarl family in the county, but don’t recognize the names.

*There is also in the 1925 census a Dick McCarl, age (born about 1882), who was born in Missouri and claims James M as his father. Possibly same person?

1895 IOWA STATE CENSUS:
Still living in Long Creek Twp. All of James Monroe and Ida May’s children are present except Dolly (not found in any census -- did she die young?). William (Clifford’s father) is age 4, Walter is age 1. Ida May is not found in this census -- I wonder if she died at the birth of Walter?

1900 CENSUS, IOWA, CLARKE CO., KNOX:
Roe (indexed as Ron) is age 48, wife Mary B is 21. At home are William S (10), George (1), and an unnamed baby age 1 month (who will soon be named “Charles”).

1910 CENSUS, IOWA, CLARKE CO., KNOX:
James R 57, with wife Mary B 31. At home are George 11, Charley 9, Lloyd 6, Lennie 4, Frank <1.

1915 IOWA CENSUS, DECATUR, LONG CREEK:
Age 63, Earnings $620, parents born in PA. Says he was born in IA, think really PA.

1920 CENSUS, IOWA, CLARKE CO., FRANKLIN:
He is 64, born in PA, wife Mary is 44, born in IA. At home are Charles 20, Lloyd 18, lennie 13, Frank 10, Floyd 6, Everett 4.

1925 CENSUS, IOWA, CLARKE CO., KNOX TWP:
Roe McCarl is age 75, has a 5th grade education, was born in PA.
