LFC NOTES: From the 1920 census we know that she was born in Indiana and that her father was born in Kentucky, and her mother in Indiana. There was also a daughter, Louise B., born in about 1909 in Indiana. Because Louise was born in Indiana instead of Iowa, I have assumed she was from a previous relationship of Martha’s. Therefore I have not listed Louise as being Newton’s daughter. Note also found her marriage to Will Hickman in 1906 in Indiana Marriage Records. Also found record of her marriage to “John Newton Machlan” in Iowa in 1912. (This marriage showed name as “Tinius”, not as “Hickman”, suggesting she used her maiden name?)
Other details taken from
http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:a44187&id=I29761910 CENSUS, INDIANA, VANDERBURGH CO., EVANSVILLE:
Martha, age 22, is living with her mother Emma and her sister Esther. (See above web site for name verification.) Her father would have died earlier that year. She has had 1 child, still living, but there is no sign of such a child in the household. Child would probably be Louise?
I found Martha’s brothers, Judson Tinius (index Timms) and Calvin Tinius living in household of Herbert and Katherine Kandell. Also there is “Bernice Hickman” (presumably Louise B.) in same household, age 23/12 months. In Evansville Ward 7.
Also found her brother Argyll Tinius in same census, so all the family is accounted for.
1940 CENSUS, HIGH POINT, DECATUR, IOWA:
Martha is there, with sons George, Frank and Paul. Living with them is aunt Margaret Low - that would be the sister of Martha’s mother.
1940 CENSUS, FORT DES MOINES, POLK, IOWA:
Martha’ mother, Emma Tinius, is living in Des Moines. With her is granddaughter Louise Machlan, age 32. That of course is Martha’s daughter by her first marriage.
