PASSENGER LIST, SHIP “HERMANN”, ARRIVING IN NEW YORK ON 18 MAR 1868: Joh Klein (age 46) arrives with wife Cathr (43), and children Elise (9 yr 6 mo), Cathr (8 yr 6 mo), Otto (6), Aug (4), Ant (2) and Carl (8 mo). He is a farmer.
SHIP HERMANN: Built by Caird & Co., Greenock, Scotland. Tonnage: 2,873. Dimensions: 337' x 40'. Single-screw, 13 1/2 knots. Compound engines. Two masts and one funnel. Iron hull.
History: Passengers: 80 first, 120 second, 500 third. Service: Bremen-Southampton-New York. Originally had inverted engines; speed 11 knots. Made her final voyage to New York in 1893. Scrapped in 1896.
1870 CENSUS, GREEN CREEK, SANDUSKY COUNTY, OH: Present are John (age 48, a farmer), Catherine (44), Elizabeth (14), Cathrine (11), Matilda (7), Augustus (6), Antony (5), Charles (3), and Christina (1). Everybody except Christina was born in Prussia.
1880 CENSUS, HURON, ERIE COUNTY, OH: John Klein is age 59, a farmer, he and his parents were born in Prussia. Wife Katie (age 55), and children Tillie (18), August (15), Antony (14), Charles (12) and Tina (11). Everybody was born in Prussia, except for Tina (Christina) who was born in Ohio.
1900 CENSUS, HURON, ERIE CO, OH: John Klein is 78 years old, born Aug 1821 in Germany. His parents were also born in Germany. Catherine is there, age 75, born Jan 1825 in Germany, as were her parents. They were married in about 1847, and have had 14 children, with 8 still living. They came to America in 1847. Household includes their granddaughter, Alice Sartor, born Jul 1881, occupation “housekeeper”. Alice’s father was born in Ohio, her mother in Germany.
