BIRTH:
The marriage record (see notes with William Gallagher) say her parents were James Gill and Anne Kelley, and in the 1930 census she says birth in Northern Ireland. I could not find birth records for Catherine, but I did find the birth on 12 Nov 1879 of “Bridget Gill” with parents “”James Gill and Anne Kelley”, in Leitrim, Northern Ireland. I think it highly likely that Bridget is the older sister of Catherine.
IMMIGRATION: The 1910 Census says she arrived in 1898, and the 1920 Census says 1895, and the 1930 Census says 1880. A search for immigration records indicated too many candidates without more details.
1920 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: Catherine is a widow, age 40, born in Ireland, immigrated to America in 1895, naturalized in 1904. She is doing “general housework”, and all the children are in school. At home are James A (age 14), Mary (12), Anna (9), and Elizabeth (8). She is renting a house on Parker Street. All children are shown with occupation “at school”, but son James has not attended since 1 Sep 1919.
1930 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: Catherine is a widow, age 50, born in Northern Ireland. Says she immigrated in 1880, is naturalized. She was first married at age 25. In the household are son James (age 24, a Chauffeur in a Taxi), Daughter May (Mary) (23, Waitress in a Restaurant), Daughter Anna (20, Stitcher in Shoe Factory), and Daughter Betty (Elizabeth) (18, not employed). ALL the children were born in Massachusetts.
MEMO: Daughter Mary married Ernest Giuva sometime between 1930 and 1936. They are found together in the 1936 Boston city directory, and in the 1940 census. City directories track them together through 1974. They have a daughter born about 1939, and a son Ernest Jr.
MEMO: Daughter Elizabeth married John Sline (brother of George) and had children Marie in 1936 and John in 1939. They are all found in the 1940 census. In 1943 Elizabeth had daughter Margaret with George Sline.
1940 CENSUS, BOSTON, SUFFOLK, MA: Catherine is a widow, age 61, born in Ireland. Her employment is “on welfare” - but says she has “other income”. She rents on Washington Street, and has been there since at least 1935. She has a 7th grade education.
