FOR FURTHER INVESTIGATION:
Edmund was a prominent member of the congregation of Rev. Thomas Sheperd in England and in Massachusetts. In 1634 he left Ipswitch Eng. on the Ship Great Hope for America with the rest of the Sheperd Company. The Great Hope was damaged in a storm at Yarmouth,Eng.,they boarded another ship called the Defence and arrived here in 1635. Because of his religious activity in Eng. he and his family sailed under assumed names as did many others. All persons leaving the country would be checked to see if they were an enemy of the Crown, if found to be so they would not allowed to depart. He was declared a freeman in 1636 and bought land on the west side of Dunster Street. He served as proprietor of Cambridge and as Deacon of the church, had a great deal to do with land grants, most notably the territory of Shawshine, now Billerica. He was married three times, his first wife was Thomasine who he married in Eng. in 1634, his second was Mary, third Reana Daniels in 1669, Edmund died in 1672. He had a total of nine children. Edmund was one of the first of the governing body of Havard Colledge. He was granted lot 59 in Billerica,MA 200 acres, of which he gave portions to each son. Edmund was the Deacon and ruling elder of The First Congregational Church in Cambridge,MA.

“He was a "preaching elder" and was obliged to leave England under an assumed name because he dissented from Church views. In 1635 he immigrated to Cambridge, MA with his first wife and son John, becoming a freeman there 3 March 1636. He was one of the original members of First Congregational Church of Cambridge and was installed as Elder 11 February 1636.
