She was 81. She was born Feb. 23, 1929, in Watauga County, N.C., and was a daughter of the late Mack and Esther McCroskey Coffey. When she was 8 years old, she moved to Mercer County, W.Va., where she attended Matoaka High School. On Oct. 7, 1946, she married Vencil G. Akers. Mrs. Akers worked at Dorchester General Hospital for 31 years, where she worked as admissions supervisor for 13 years and in the billing department. She retired Dec. 27, 1997. She enjoyed country and gospel music, shopping, gardening, reading, computer and the love of her family. Mrs. Akers was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cambridge for many years. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Vencil G. Akers of Cambridge; one daughter, Teresa Mayo and husband Chip of Raleigh, N.C.; grandchildren, Renee Akers and fiancé Tom Murphy, Rebecca Dodson and husband John, and Jenna Smith and husband Jonathan, Will Mayo, Andrew Mayo, Allie Mayo and Julie Mayo; great-grandchildren, Ryan Akers, Jack Dodson and Peyton Smith; two sisters, Margaret Farley and Virginia Bailey; a brother, Steven Coffey; and several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Mrs. Akers was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Akers; two brothers, Lonnie R. Coffey and Edward Coffey; and a sister, Nellie Coffey. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 2, at the Maryland Veterans Cemetery Chapel with the Rev. Steven A. Trice officiating. There will be no viewing. Honorary pallbearers will be Mark Robbins, Kenny Robbins, Robin Hall, Brandon Hall, Bobby Hughes, Wylie Burton and Wallace Willin. Vencil Garland Akers, son of Walter McKivley Akers and Hazel Hodge, was born on 11 March 1926 in Mercer Co., WV. Akers, 91, of Cambridge passed away on Friday, May 5, 2017 at his home. He was born in Mercer County, West Virginia on March 11, 1926 and was a son of the late Walter and Hazel Hodge Akers. He attended Matoaka High School. After serving in the U.S. Army during WW II, stationed in Europe, he received his G.E.D. On October 7, 1946, he married the former Bertha Coffey, who passed away on November 29, 2010. Mr. Akers had a long career with Esskay Meat Company and later was employed with Airpax. He enjoyed woodworking, watching sports especially the Orioles and the Ravens. Mr. Akers was a member of the Cambridge Elks, American Legion Post 91 and Choptank Memorial Post 7460 VFW.
