Lenoir Man Faces Fake Bill Charge

Lenoir, Jan. 27 (AP) - A Lenoir man who allegedly pasted the corners from $20 play money onto genuine $10 bills has been charged with counterfeiting.

Charlotte Secret Service chief Vernon Spicer identified the defendant as Cone Carl Coffey Jr. Coffey was arraigned yesterday before U. S. Commissioner Fred H. Hoover here and posted $500 bond for trial in Federal District Court.

Coffey is charged with passing one of the bogus notes at a service station here Saturday to pay for gasoline. Later that day, a storekeeper said Coffey handed him one of the fake bills, but he thought Coffey was playing a joke.
