He was born July 4, 1921, in Watauga County to the late Milton Leroy and Velma Triplett Coffey. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, M. L. Coffey and Adolphus Coffey; one sister, Junie C. Walker; and one grandchild. Mr. Coffey was retired from Baker Industries. Survivors include his wife, Nina Turnmire Coffey of the home; one son, Richard M. Coffey of Lenoir; one daughter, Mrs. Ray (Marie) Powell of Lenoir; two brothers, Wade Coffey of Laplatta, Md. and Odus Coffey of South Hills, Va; five sisters, Winnie Hartley, Reba Price, Wilma Horn and Jeanette McNeil, all of Lenoir and Mozell Beach of Hickory; three grandchildren; one step grandchild; and three step great-grandchildren. The funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Lynn Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in Shiloh United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends today from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Richard M. Coffey, 2556 Brentwood Circle, Lenoir. She was born August 28, 1929 in Watauga County to the late William L. and Mamie Coffey Turnmire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Ronard L. Coffey; three brothers, Vilas Turnmire, Eugene Turnmire and William "Max" Turnmire; one sister, Pauline Turnmire Coffey; and one granddaughter, Leah Dannielle Powell. Mrs. Coffey was a former cook at Smithey's Department Store for more than 20 years and was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, Richard Coffey and wife Sherrie of Lenoir; one daughter, Mrs. Marie Powell and husband Ray of Lenoir; one brother, Grady Turnmire of Lenoir; one sister, Mrs. Lucille Sherrill of Lenoir; and three grandchildren, Jamie Coffey, Mrs. Angie Kirby and husband Brad, and Amanda Powell and fiancé Jason Johnson; one great-granddaughter, Taylor Kirby; one step-grandson, Bradley Powell; and four step-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Sunday, September 20, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Greer-McElveen Funeral Home Chapel conducted by the Rev. Joe Parker and the Rev. Allan Carr. Interment will follow at Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
