George Thomas Coffey

Mr. George Thomas Coffey, 89, of Laytown Road, Lenoir, died Wednesday, Jan. 3, 2007.

He was born August 29, 1917 in Caldwell County, to the late Will and Bessie Townsend Coffey.

Mr. Coffey was a self-employed farmer and was of the Baptist faith. Survivors include four sons, Ray Coffey of Banner Elk, Charles Coffey, Clarence Coffey and Donald Coffey, all of Lenoir; a daughter, Carrie Townsend of Lenoir; three brothers, John Coffey, Abe Coffey and Jack Coffey, all of Boone; a sister, Coralee Greer of Lenoir; 17 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Cordie Viola Coffey; three sisters, Ruth Coffey, Lula Church and Nancy Coffey; a brother, Joe Coffey; two grandsons, Paul Joseph Townsend and Jerry Wayne Coffey; and one great-grandson, Kenneth Townsend.

Services were held Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007 at 2 p.m. at Laytown Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Ed Greene. Interment followed at Laytown Baptist Church Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were Billy Townsend, Chris Coffey, Will Coffey, Joel Coffey, William Coffey, Tony Hudson, and Corey Coffey.

Honorary pallbearer was Clint Coffey.

Greer-McElveen Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.
