Mr. Coffey was born in Watauga County on December 29, 1928, to the late Mack Donald and Bertha Ellen Anderson Coffey. He attended Temple Baptist Church in Stony Point. Mr. Coffey was a veteran of the United States Army. Mr. Coffey was known for being a master mechanic, he loved working on cars. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, watching westerns, and enjoyed old time music programs, especially "Song of the Mountain." Mr. Coffey retired from Southern Fasteners in Statesville where he worked as a header operator. He also worked for the railroad in Chicago, IL. In addition to his parents Mr. Coffey was preceded in death by his first wife of 52 years, Elvera Anderson Coffey; one son, Lee Allan Coffey, and three brothers. Mr. Coffey leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 4 years, Hilda Dagenhart Payne Coffey; sons, Walter Gwen, Ronald Clayton and wife, Monica, Lloyd Donald and wife, Jeannette, Michael Dean and wife Crystal, and Brent Richard and wife Tamara; daughters, Wanda Joy Hollars and Renee Marie Greene; brother, J.D.; sister, Retha; 19 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews, and special friends. Visitation will be Wednesday, October 19, 2016 from 1 until 3 pm at Alexander Funeral Service in Taylorsville. The funeral will follow in the Chapel. The Rev. Gary W. Jennings will be officiating the service. Burial will take place in the Taylorsville City Cemetery. Full military rites will be provided by DAV Ch. 84 of Taylorsville and Ch. 6 of Hudson. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice of Iredell County, 2347 Simonton Rd., Statesville, NC 28625. Elvera "Vera" Mae Anderson Coffey, 69, of Taylorsville passed away Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at her residence. She was born May 1, 1934, to Benny and Beatrice Kirkeeng Anderson in La Crosse. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard and LeRoy Anderson. Vera worked at Alexander County Hospital for over 20 years as a registered dietician. She was of the Lutheran faith. Loved ones left to cherish her memory include: her husband of 52 years, Clayton D. Coffey; eight children, Lee A. Coffey of the home, Walter Coffey of Charlotte, USMC retired Ronald Clayton Coffey of Stony Point, and Wanda C. Hollars, Lloyd Coffey, Michael Coffey, Brent Coffey and Renee' Frye all of Taylorsville; two sisters, Delores Johnson of Ettrick, Wis., and JaAnn Gilberg of Holmen, Wis.; two brothers, Myron Anderson of Denver, Colo., and Adrian Anderson of North Bend, Wis.; 14 grandchildren, Jennifer C. Kerhoulas, Jonathan Clayton Coffey, Clayton A. Coffey, Sarah Coffey, Shawn Meredith, Adam Hollars, Joshua Coffey, Brandy Coffey, Bobbi Coffey, Ian Coffey, Colin Coffey, Nolan Coffey, Nadia Frye and Jordan Frye; three great-grandchildren, Richard Kerhoulas, Tyler Kerhoulas and Melody Kerhoulas; along with a number of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be today, Jan. 27, 2004, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Alexander Funeral Service. Funeral services will follow in the chapel at 3 pm. The Rev. Gary Jennings and Rev. Steve Watson will officiate. Burial will follow in Taylorsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers are USMC Lance Corporal Shawn Meredith, Clayton Coffey, Adam Hollars, Terry Hamm, Scott Walker and Scott Johnson.
