Eli was probably born in Albemarle Co., VA on 1 March 1764.154,155 Eli served in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.156 He appeared in the census in 1790 in Wilkes Co., NC.157 Eli applied for a pension in McMinn Co., TN on 6 May 1839 based upon his service during the Revolutionary War..158 Eli died in Johnson, Pettis Co., MO on 5 September 1847. Before he was eighteen years old, Eli Coffey had served two three-month terms of enlistment as a substitute, first for Thomas Fields and then for Eli's own brother, Ambrose, who was nearsighted. He went into service on behalf of Thomas Fields because Thomas had a "large family dependent on his daily labor for their sustenance ." Eli survived the war and became a respected citizen and a responsible member of the Yadkin Grove Church. He married Hannah Allen, daughter of David and Hannah Allen, and they probably lived in Wilkes Co., NC until 1816 when they moved to Wayne Co., KY. Eli was active in the Yadkin Baptist church, and served as church clerk from 1804-1807. In June of 1807 he left the church "on account of principle and rules of said society." In 1808 he was a Justice of the Peace. He is said to have died at the home of his son, Col. Asbury Madison Coffey in Knobnoster, MO on Sep. 5, 1847. But, Asbury did not move to Knobnoster until 1859 and was in Pettis Co., MO at the time. there is a Rev. War pension application for Eli, and his son Asbury wrote a letter in which he says that his father entered the army at the age of 16, and served the balance of the war. Eli and Hannah had two boys that died in infancy, James and Allen, and one that lived to maturity. Eli Coffey and Hannah Allen were married. Hannah Allen was born circa 1762.
