Born Oct. 23, 1926 in Nelson County, she was the daughter of the late Hercy F. and Lora Burgess (Ramsey) Coffey. Lorine was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Stuarts Draft. She was employed by Wayne Tex where she worked as the payroll clerk until she retired. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Hatter. Survivors include her loving husband of 69 years, Glenn H. Allen; children, Gary R. Allen and wife, Denice, of Waynesboro and Steven G. Allen and wife, Shanna, of Stuarts Draft; sister, Lura Steele of Spottswood; three grandchildren, Whitney Dargle of Lexington, Kentucky, Carrie V. Coffey of Staunton and Katlyn R. Allen of Lyndhurst; five great-grandchildren; as well as a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery with Pastor Billy Coffey officiating. A reception will be held after the graveside service in the social hall at Calvary United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death just weeks ago by his beloved wife of 69 years, Lorine Coffey Allen, whom he had met as a teen at White Rock Christian Church in the mountains of Nelson County. Parents, Ethel and Eugene "Hoot" Allen; his brother, Dennis Allen; and sisters, Verna Daughtery and Louise Fitzgerald, also preceded him in death.He is survived by his brother, E. M. (Maxie) Allen of Stuarts Draft; and sons, Gary Allen and wife, Denice, of Waynesboro, Steven Allen and wife, Shanna, of Stuarts Draft; granddaughters, Whitney Allen Dargle and husband, Kellen, of Lexington Ky., Carrie Coffey and husband, Heath, of Staunton, Kaitlyn Allen of Lyndhurst; six great- grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.Glenn was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, Stuarts Draft. Prior to joining Calvary, he was a member of the White Hill Church of the Brethren, serving as Sunday School Superintendent, a member of the church board, and as a member of the choir. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Navy in the Pacific theater from 1944-1946 as a gunner on the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Pittsburgh and was part of the Naval assault on Iwo Jima in March 1945. During that assault, the Japanese struck back, bombing the U.S. aircraft carrier Franklin rendering it powerless to defend itself. The crew of the Pittsburgh rushed to the Franklin, rescued 34 men from the water, hooked a line to the Franklin and towed it to safety, while twice gunning off Japanese air attacks attempting to finish off the Franklin. On June 4, 1945, the Pittsburgh was caught in a typhoon near Okinawa in 70-knot winds and 100-foot waves. The bow of the Franklin sheared off at the bulkhead; after battling the storm for seven hours, the Franklin limped into Guam on June 10, 1945 without a single crewman being lost.Glenn was an accomplished bluegrass musician who loved playing the mandolin and singing tenor and lead vocals. He was an original member of the band, "The Skyline Boys" along with his father "Hoot", his uncle "Pug", and his cousin, George Allen. The Skyline Boys had a radio show every Saturday on Lexington station WREL in the late 1940's and early 1950's and also played throughout Virginia and West Virginia for a number of years. Glenn was also a founding member of the gospel quintet group, "The Brethren-Aires", who sang at local churches and other venues in the Shenandoah Valley during the 1960's and 1970's.A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at Calvary United Methodist Church, Stuarts Draft.
