Haywood died by suicide on 27 June 1938 at the age of 47 at home in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC and was buried at Lower Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Lenoir, Caldwell Co., NC on 29 June 1938.^{31732,31733,31734}
