Sterlie Edward Coffey, 68, Stearns, died Friday, Feb. 15, at Humana Hospital Lake Cumberland following a short illness.

He was a coal miner and a member of Cherokee Baptist Church.

Born Mar. 2, 1916, in Slavans, he was the son of the late Reuben and Alice Vaughn Coffey.

He was married May 1, 1936, to the former Ester Dobbs, who survives.

Other survivors include sever children, Joyce Nelson, Stearns, Ellen Combs, Hamilton, Ohio, Hazel Matthews, Cincinnati, Ohio, Sterlie Coffey, Jr., Whitley City, Joanne Coffey, Elmwood, Ohio, Susan Marcus, Mr. Healthy, Ohio, and Kenneth Wade Coffey, Stearns; a brother, Homer Coffey, Stearns; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 12:30 p.m. today at Hickman Funeral Home, Whitley City, with the Rev. Henry Cox officiating.

Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.

WHITLEY CITY - Sterlie Edward Coffey, 68, of Starns, a retired miner and husband of Ester Dobbs Coffey, died yesterday at Humana Hospital Lake Cumberland in Somerset after a short illness. Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday at Hickman Funeral Home. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today.

Sterling Edward "Sterlie" Coffey and Ester Dobbs were married. They appeared in the census on 30 April 1940 in McCreary Co., KY.⁴¹³⁸⁹ Ester Dobbs, daughter of Thomas Dobbs and Julia Jones, was born on 4 September 1918 in McCreary Co., KY.⁴¹³⁹⁰ Ester died on 24 November 2003 at the age of 85 in Kentucky and was buried at Sherd Dobbs Cemetery in Whitley City, McCreary Co., KY.⁴¹³⁹¹

In accordance to Mr. Coffey's wishes, his remains were cremated. The family received friends on Friday, December 19, 2014 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Hickman-Strunk Funeral Home. He was born June 22, 1947 in Co-operative, Kentucky to Sterling Coffey and Ester (Dobbs) Coffey. Sterling enjoyed hunting and fishing. Preceding him in death are his parents, and a sister, Joann Coffey. Survivors include his brother, Wade Coffey and wife, Lora, of Alcoa, Tennessee; sisters, Joyce Nelson, Hazel Matthews, Ellen Combs, and Susan Marcum; and several nieces and nephews.
