Witherspoon, 91, of Lebanon passed away Wednesday at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital. Roger was born in Stilwell, Kan., the son of Benjamin and Abigail (Morrow) Witherspoon. He grew up near Stilwell where he attended school. He then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for a short time before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard aircraft carrier during World War II. After the war, he married Betty Bowling and the couple raised their family together in Missouri, Northern California, Kansas and Oregon. They moved to the Willamette Valley of Oregon in 1966. His wife, Betty, died approximately 10 years before. He worked for the Champion and U.S. Plywood Mills in Lebanon until retiring. Roger enjoyed traveling in his RV, farming, carpentry work and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He will be remembered for his hard work ethic, his love for people and his friendly disposition. His grandchildren and great grandchildren were the joy of his life. He is survived by three sons, Roy of Lebanon, Dennis of Shedd and Larry Witherspoon of Provo, Utah; daughter Jackie Reeve of Lebanon; two sisters, Eleanor Baker and Alice Holt, both of Missouri; 11 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. A viewing will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday, March 18, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1955 S. Fifth St., Lebanon. A funeral service will begin at 2 p.m. Monday, March 18, also at the church. Burial will follow in the Lebanon IOOF Cemetery. |
