Coffey, 80, 904 Meridian Street, Shelbyville, passed away Sunday, January 18 at the Heritage House Convalescent Center in Shelbyville. He had been ill for several years. He was born in Ono, Kentucky, on February 7, 1900, the son of Doctor Gan Coffey and Nancey [sic] Popplewell Coffey. Mr. Coffey lived in Shelbyville since 1953. A painter, he retired in 1960. He was a native of Russell County. Survivors include his wife, Nancy E. Johnson Coffey (They were married in Eli, Kentucky, on January 21, 1919); two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Bayne, Shelbyville, and Mrs. Virgil (Eulena) Campbell of Madison, Tennessee; four sons, Gradeth Coffey of Connersville, Tennessee, Richard Coffey, Jr., of Waynesville, Missouri, Frank Coffey of Shelbyville, and Carthel Coffey of Texas. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Gosser, St. Louis. Mr. Coffey was preceded in death by two children and two brothers. Funeral services were held at the Murphy Mortuary in Shelbyville, Indiana, on Wednesday, January 21, with burial in Winchester Cemetery, Shelby Co., Indiana. Richard Gatewood Coffey and Mary Etna Johnson were married on 21 January 1919 in Eli, Russell Co., KY. They appeared in the census on 19 January 1920 in North Jamestown, Russell Co., KY.24568 Mary Etna Johnson was born on 14 August 1900 in Russell Co., KY. Mary died in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., IN on 14 January 1983 and was buried at Winchester Cemetery in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., IN in January 1983 .24569 The Times Journal, Russell Springs, Russell Co., KY, Jul. 20, 1983 Mary Etna Coffey Mrs. Mary Etna Coffey, age 82, of 904 Merridian Street, Shelbyville, Indiana, died at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Heritage House Convalescent Center, where she had been a patient for six months. She had been ill since May. She waas born August 14, 1900, in Russell County, Kentucky, a daughter of James and Rachel (Rainey) Johnson. She was married in Russell County on January 21, 1919, to Richard G. Coffey, who preceded her in death January 18, 1981. Mrs. Coffey had lived in Shelbyville since 1948 and was a member of the Bible Holiness Church. Surviving are four sons, Gradeth "Gus" Coffey, Connersville; Carthel Coffey, Houston, Texas; Richard Coffey Jr., Waynesville, Missouri; and Frank Coffey, Shelbyville; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ruth) Bayne, Shelbyville, and Mrs. Virgil (Evelena) Campbell, Madison, Indiana; and a sisters, Mrs. Della Ashbrook, Cincinnati. Also surviving are 24 grandchildren and 16 freat-grandchildren. Four brothers, four sisters and three grandchildren preceded her in death. Services were at 1 p.m. Monday at the Murphy Mortuary in Shelbyville, Indiana with the Rev. David E. Boyne [sic], a grandson, officiating. Burial was in the Winchester Cemetery.
