631. Joel William Coffee was born on 15 April 1826 in Alabama. Joel died in Dexter, Cooke Co., TX on 13 September 1885.

At some point in time, and probably in Alabama, records began to record the surname as Coffee. This probably occurred because of the supposed connection to Gen. John Coffee of that state who was a descendant of Peter and Susannah Mathews Coffey of Prince Edward Co., VA. Peter was not a close relative of Edward from whom this family descends.

Not all descendants of Joel used the Coffee spelling; some used the traditional Coffey spelling. They are all spelled Coffee in this descendants list for convenience.

Joel William Coffee and Elizabeth Ann Moore were married on 26 January 1848 in Morgan Co., AL.²⁶⁴⁶ They^²⁶⁴⁶ appeared in the census on 25 March 1850 in Somerville, Morgan Co., AL.²⁶⁴⁷ They^²⁶⁴⁷ appeared in the census on 4 June 1860 in Sommerville, Morgan Co., AL.²⁶⁴⁸ Joel and Elizabeth^²⁶⁴⁸ appeared in the census on 1 July 1870 in Guntown, Lee Co., MS.²⁶⁴⁹ They^²⁶⁴⁹ appeared in the census on 23 June 1880 in Franklin Co., AL.²⁶⁵⁰ Elizabeth Ann Moore was born in April 1833 in Tennessee. She lived with her son Joel William Coffey in Gainsville, Cooke Co., TX on 20 June 1900.
