Gladys Crist Candler

Gladys Crist Candler, 107, of Lynchburg, died Monday Dec. 18, 2006, at the Carrington. She was the widow of Carlton Conway Candler.

Born in Campbell County, she was a daughter of the late James Walker and Edith Coffey Crist. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and a volunteer at Virginia Baptist Hospital.

Mrs. Candler was preceded in death by a son, Carlton Conway Candler Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Mildred Parker Candler; three sisters, Cordelle Crist, Maggie Crist and Sarah Crist; and a brother, Walker Crist.

She is survived by a grandson, Carlton Conway Candler III of New York; a granddaughter, Elizabeth C. Kelly and her husband Greg, of Richmond; two great-grandchildren, Greer Kelly and Parker Kelly, both of Richmond; and one nephew, Charles Crist, of Culpeper.

Rev. Richard H. Ecklund will hold a funeral service at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at Centenary United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Presbyterian Cemetery.

The family will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the service at the church.

Gladys Elinor Crist and Carleton Conway Candler were married. They appeared in the census on 12 April 1930 at 2011 Poplar St. in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA.⁴²³⁸⁹ Carleton Conway Candler was born on 6 September 1897 in Virginia. He registered for the WWI draft on 12 September 1918⁴²³⁹⁰ He lived with her parents at 2003 Grace St. in Lynchburg, Independent City, VA on 18 April 1940.
