She was born May 12, 1918 in Watauga County, a daughter of the late Jesse Amos and Vertie Harrison Hampton. Mrs. Elrod was a retired plant worker from TRW in Boone, and a member of Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Martha Eggers and husband, Charles, of Boone; one son, Joseph Elrod and wife, Eileen, of Sparta; one sister, Ivadene Hampton of Boone; two grandsons, Dean Eggers and wife, Robin, of Wytheville, Va. and David Eggers and wife, Susan, of Hickory; and two great-grandsons, Harrison and Elliott Eggers, both of Hickory. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alfonso Elrod; and three sisters, Glenda Story, Gladys Brown, and Winifred Hampton. Burial followed in Mount Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Vernon Baptist Church Building Fund, 3505 Bamboo Road, Boone, N.C. 28607. Margaret V.
