Archelaus [Arc-uh-lay-us] purchased 120 acres from John Wade on Davis Creek in 1777, Albemarle Co., VA. Source: Coffey Cousins newsletter, March, 1993.

Marvin Coffey descended from Archelaus. He wrote that there are no records confirming his exact date of birth, but generally considered to be 1755 in Albemarle Co., VA. It is not known when he married Eleanor Wade, but from date of birth of oldest son it is presumed that the marriage took place in 1775.

In Oct. 1777 Archelaus bought 150 acres on Davis Creekin Amherst Co. from his father-in-law, John Wade. The next year he sold 50 acres back to Wade, and the other 100 acres to James McAlexander. This sale is presumed to be in preparation for the family's move to Wilkes Co., NC. It is believed that Archelaus and the family of James and Elizabeth Coffey moved at about the same time.

On Dec. 29, 1778 he entered 250 acres in Burke Co on the main Mulberry Fork of Johns River. For a yet unknown reason this land was transferred to others, and he settled on his land in Wilkes Co.

The Wilkes Co. entry was on Jan. 4, 1779 for 60 acres on the north fork of King's Creek in present day Caldwell Co. The sale is also recorded in the 1782 deed books but not clear if additional property was purchased, or another recording for the same land.

Another source, citing The Wade Quarterly, Vol. 7, Issue 3, tells us that Archelaus and Eleanor had four sons, James M., John W., Hezekiah and Bailey. There is no mention of a daughter.

Archelaus Coffey and Eleanor Wade were married circa 1775 in Amherst Co., VA. Eleanor Wade, daughter of John Wade and Elizabeth , was born circa 1755 in Albemarle Co., VA.

Daughter of John and Elizabeth Wade. Marvin Coffey wrote that because there were so many Wade families in Colonial Virginia that littls is known of Eleanor's ancestors.

Eleanor's father John, and his brother Pearce were probably in Albemarle Co., VA as early as 1750. Eleanor's mother may have been a McAlexander. Marvin noted that there were several of that name who were associated with the Wade family; three of them witnessed John's will made in 1785.
