"William W.'s son William Montaballe [sic] Coffey was my great grandfather (b. 15 April 1834). He was born in the Massie Mill area where he farmed and is reported by family to have been a cobbler. Their first property of 126 acres on Pond Run, in Nelson County, was a gift from Cynthia's parents, George and Dicey Coffey Wood. On 5 April 1881 they purchased and lived on 200 acres at the headwaters of the Pedlar River in Amherst County. It is most probable this is where Cynthia died 2 February 1890 at age 53. William M. is reported to have had ill health most of his life since the Civil War. He served in the Second Rockbridge Artillery joining 10 July 1861 in Fairfield. Years later he applied for a pension on 20 April 1900. Finally, on 24 May 1902 he received a mere $15.00. He died in Rockbridge County 26 June 1905 and is buried at Neriah Cemetery.

"William M. and Cynthia's children were Sarah (Sally), William, Matthew D., Delilah, Lafayette, Annie and Reuben Wood. Lafayette Washington Columbus Coffey (b. 26 April 1874) married Annie Mioria Bear (Ward) of Rockingham County 1 January 1896. Lafayette was known as "Fate." In addition to farming and working with wood, he was a talented blacksmith, forging and tempering steel. Between the years c1899-1913 in Disputanta (Prince George Co) he worked as Section Foreman for the N&W Railroad. Four of his children were born there. Due to what was called "swamp fever," his wife Annie had to return home to Rockbridge Co. and Fate rode the train him to Riverside Station on weekends. Annie and Fate were a close couple, and in the evenings when all the farm chores were done, he would often sit at his desk and read to his children by lamplight. Fate and his brothers belonged to the Modern Woodmen (a fraternal benefit Society) that was founded in 1883. Fate died 3 January 1927 and is also buried at Neriah Cemetery along side his wife Annie.

"Their children with spouses are Cornelia Jane (m. Samuel Allen), Edwell Dewy (nm), Lewis Westel (d. infant), Theodore W. (d. 2 years), Ann Margaret (m. Elmer Whiteside), Lafayette Ashley (m. Stella Jarvis), James Love (m. Anna thompson), Gilmer Clinton (m. Catherine Wiseman), Roe E. (m. Margaret Wiseman), Mary Catherine (m. Edward R. Long), John Henry (m. Dorothny Ogden), Herbert Mapp (m. Hilda Ogden), Ruby May (m. Caster Gilbert), Garnett Odell Dudley (m. Leona Plogger)." [Submitted by Dakota Blue Coffey]
