He was born Oct. 20, 1918, in Ashe County to the late James Phillips and Nancy Hurley Phillips. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Leona Philyaw Phillips, one brother and four sisters. Mr. Phillips was a member of Free Spirit Baptist Church and was retired from the furniture industry. Survivors include two sons, Robert Wayne Phillips, Sr., and Roger Michael Phillips, both of Lenoir; one daughter, Mrs. Jerry (Inez) Penley of Lenoir; one brother, Lester Dale Phillips of Lenoir; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. The funeral is 2 p.m. Saturday at Free Spirit Baptist Church with the Revs. Calvin Hargett, Bill Wright and Kenneth Mashburn officiating. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the services. Burial will be in the Blue Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at Pendry's Lenoir Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Mickeal Phillips, Danny Craig, Keith Owens, Lindsey Blair, Adam Coffey and Junior Hayes.
