Elmer Philyaw

Elmer C. Philyaw, one of God's sweetest and gentlest creatures, passed beyond our awareness on Sept. 7 at Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care. He was 89.

Elmer was born on May 25, 1919 in Freemont, Va., to the late Leonard Philyaw, a railroad engineer, and Nora Gragg Philyaw, a homemaker. He was preceded in death by his parents and all his brothers and sisters. The family is complete once again.

Elmer is survived by the "apple of his eye," his wife Lois Beane Philyaw, a woman from whom he drew immeasurable strength and whose hand he sought in bed every night of their 67 years of marriage; his two sons and their spouses, Stephen E. Philyaw and Rita, and Michael G. Philyaw and Debra, all of Lenoir; four grandsons, Eric, Todd, Jason, and Zachary; one step grandson, Brad Suddreth; one step granddaughter, April Bolick; six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews, both in Lenoir and in Kingsport, Tenn.; hundreds of loving and valued friends; and countless brothers and sisters in Christ.

He served 18 months with the Civilian Conservation Corp in Mortimer; then served in the Army during WWII as an artilleryman in both the North Africa and European theaters. After the war he was employed at Fairfield Chair, the Blue Bell, and Lenoir Mirror, before becoming head of security for Burkeyarns/Burkeknits of Valdese, a position he held until his retirement.

Elmer was a man of great faith and unending love. A founding builder of Mountain View Baptist Church, he served as a Deacon there for many years, as well as at Ocean Isle Baptist Church, and Lakeview Baptist Church. Nothing delighted him more than spending time in God's house. His shining example of a Christ based, humble, and loving life, inspired and touched all who knew him.

The family will receive friends today, Sept. 9, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Pendry's Funeral Home in Lenoir.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at Lakeview Baptist Church with the Rev. Ron Burgett and the Rev. Alan Hall officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be Eric Philyaw, Todd Philyaw, Jason Philyaw, Zachary Philyaw, Brad Suddreth, and David Smart. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Lakeview Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to Lakeview Baptist Church, 325 Shasta Lane, Lenoir, NC 28645 or Caldwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 902 Kirkwood St., Lenoir, NC 28645.
