She lived life with curiosity & wonder and her love was without boundaries. Nola Jean was born in Blowing Rock, NC, on February 11, 1937, to William Thurman and Lydia Coffey Gragg and graduated from Blowing Rock High School and Clevenger Business College in Hickory, NC. Nola Jean's accomplishments were endless. She was a writer for The Sarasota Tribune and the Lenoir News Topic, a small business owner of Dee Nola's Boutique and Sandy Lane Salon, a Store Manager for the Charles Shop, and she retired from Sears Call Center in Greensboro, NC, as a Customer Service Supervisor. Nola Jean enjoyed giving back to her community and was very active in public service throughout her life. She was an active leader of several Girl Scout troops and past President of the Lenoir Junior Woman's Club. A member of the Guilford County Rock and Mineral Club, Nola loved crystals and gemstones and could identify them and their properties. She enjoyed traveling, camping, hiking, painting and jewelry making. She also loved music, dancing and spending time in nature. Nola Jean's zest for life and living will be missed but not forgotten. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her brothers Harold and Jack Gragg. She is survived by her husband, Gerald (Jerry) Couts;, her daughter, Dolores Smith Laney and husband Walker of Cheraw, SC; daughter, Dory Smith and partner Chris Barker of FL; son, David Allen Smith of NC; step-daughter, Karen Couts Maske and husband Darren of Cary, NC; and step-son Greg Couts and wife Maria of Charlotte, NC; grandchildren, David and Jack Smith, Emily and Ben Maske, Joel and Jessica Couts, and Jeremy Barker; brothers, Dean Gragg and wife Helen of Biloxi, MS, Dayton Gragg and wife Sue and Richard Gragg of Blowing Rock; sister, Penny Gragg Catterton and husband Greg of Glade Valley, NC; and sister-in-law, Shirley Gragg of Sawmills; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service in celebration of her life will be held on March 23, 2013, with a celebration reception for family and friends at 1 pm followed by a tribute to her life at 2 pm.
