She was born Sept. 23, 1938, in Caldwell County to the late William Henry Coffey and Annie Mae Summerow Coffey. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Steve W. Coffey, Stanley E. Coffey and Albert L. Coffey; and a sister, Mary E. Horton. Thelma was retired from Laws Beauty Shop where her customers knew her as a beautician and not a magician. She loved to crochet and was always making baby blankets and throws for her friends and family. Most important in her life and something that would always bring a smile to her face was the love for her family. She was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where she enjoyed singing in the choir and fellowship with her church family and friends. Survivors include her husband, James Garlen Laws; two sons, Randy Laws and wife Kim of Hudson, and Kenny Laws and wife Janette of Maiden; one stepdaughter, Brenda Holland of Lenoir; one brother, Ira L. Coffey of Lenoir; four grandchildren, Shannon Hefner and husband Justin, Eric, Noah and Mackenzie Laws; five stepgrandchildren; 10 stepgreat-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; one niece; several cousins; and an aunt. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 29, 2011, at 2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church conducted by the Rev. Alan Carr. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Park.
